If your dvd player on your flat panel tv says "wrong disc" then it usually means that the format used to create the disc is not compatible with your player. Read the manual that came with your tv to figure out what file formats are acceptable for burned discs. Try another disc. Verify with a store bought disc that your player works. If it plays regular discs and not home made or burned media, then you will know that its just the file format used when the disc was created that is causing the issue.
The solution for your problem will be needing a little knowledge with electronic repair and hands on.Most common problem for portable DVD player is their 1) Spindle motor the 2) flex cable ( tin ribbon wire connecting the optic lens and the main board)
note: to check if your spindle motor is working good, you must measure it's resistance and it should be around 200ohms. For the flexcable all you have to do is check the continuity.
there is a setting if you can find it, switch it to ntsc or pal to figure out what format the dvd is in/
american made dvds are usually ntsc/
imports are usually pal/
Inside the machine the laser will sometimes adjust itself to a position just out of reach of the disc and you will get a "default message", so it doesn't necessarily mean you have the "wrong disc". This can be adjusted by yourself or take it in to be done. This is only, of course that you have covered the basics and cleaned the discs and inside machine. Just blow in it even, they do attract dust as dvd's are like a magnet to dust.
Bad news ** it may have damaged the Laser or knocked it out of alignment. A Electronic Tech would have to do that kind of repair.
Depending on what brand it is it may not be cost effective to repair. If it was made in China there will probably be no parts available
