Unless this is a unit more than 10 years old, you have what's called a Rotary Encoder. It is not a volume control. My guess is that when you turn the knob right or left, it never stops. This control is an input to the microprocessor(computer within your receiver) which will require a major repair. If you would like to discuss a repair, please visit my website at audioserviceclinic.com and contact me there.
Sounds like you need to take it in to have it looked at. no simple fix unless you are an appliance technician. hard to walk a beginner through. i suggest calling an stereo repair guy.

Hi.
The volume knob issue alone sounds like it's hardware-related and therefore not easily fixed. Also, since the remote appears to be working (the LED's are lighting up), but the unit is not controlled anymore, the IR sensor is probably faulty as well. I would seriously consider sending this AV receiver in for repair. If it's still within warranty, you shouldn't need to pay anything for the repair.

It's not much but I hope this helps.

I was hoping for more - many years ago I was an electronics technician for H-P so although I haven't done it recently I'm not a novice. Can you provide a more detailed suggestion? Thanks.
