It sounds as if you are trying to set up manual IP settings. The subnet mask you will want to use will be 255.255.255.0

Static route for two different subnets

You did not say where are your two computers. Anyway, computers should work on most subnets routes except between 10.20.30.0 and 10.20.40.0 subnet.
Static routing should be set on two computers not on routers.
Assume computer A is connected to 10.20.30.252 Router A and Computer B is connected to router B.
On Computer A, you need to add route to -inet 10.20.40.0/24 via GW 203.187.106.147, and on computer B to set rotue to -inet 10.20.30/24via GW 203.187.106.138. That is all you need.

Why Subnet Mask is used with IP address

In networking the subnet mask is used with IP address to get the Network ID. The Network ID is used to identify that the particular IP address belongs to which network. To get the network ID the Subnet Mask is AND ed with the IP address in binary format.

Example:-

IPv4 address contains 4 fields and each field is 8bit

IP Address - 192.168.10.2

Subnet Mask (Default)- 255.255.255.0

Binary

192 -> 11000000

168 -> 10101000

10 -> 00001010

2 -> 00000010

255 -> 11111111

Logical AND (formula)

* 0 AND 0 = 0
* 0 AND 1 = 0
* 1 AND 0 = 0
* 1 AND 1 = 1

192.168.10.2 ------> 11000000.10101000.00001010.00000010

255.255.255.0 ------> 11111111.11111111.11111111.11111111
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11000000.10101000.00001010.00000000 (AND ing)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hence after AND ing we get the network ID that is 192.168.10.0, so the IP address 192.168.10.2 belongs to this network.

Enjoy networking.

How to figure out your default subnet mask

A subnet mask is a 32-bit binary number, very similar to an IP address. And like an IP address, the subnet mask is usually expressed as a set of four octets written in decimal form, with each octet separated by a period.

The subnet mask is used by routers and switches to determine which part of a computer or other device's IP address is the network identifier, and which part is the host identifier. There are three default subnet masks, one for each of the IP classes A, B, or C. The default subnet masks are:

Class A = 255.0.0.0
Class B = 255.255.0.0
Class C = 255.255.255.0

To determine the default subnet mask for your network, all you need to do is see which class your network falls into. A network's class is assigned based on the first octet (the set of digits before the first period) of the IP address. For example, to find out which class the network 123.22.8.0 belongs to, you would see where "123" fits into the following table:

First Octet: Class:
1-126 = Class A
128-191 = Class B
192-223 = Class C

So for the example above, 123.22.8.0 is a Class A network, which means it would have a default subnet mask of 255.0.0.0.

Most home and office networks will be Class C networks, so your default subnet mask will typically be (you guessed it) 255.255.255.0. Not all networks use the default subnets, but for those that do, figuring it out is easy once you know which class your network fits into.

How do i establish a subnet with a A address

The subnet is determined by the subnet mask. Class A addresses are contained in the following range: 0.0.0.0 - 127.255.255.255. The most common use of a class A address is 10.0.0.0

In class A networking you may use a subnet mask from 255.0.0.0 all the way to 255.255.255.255

The subnet would work as the following example:

Network Address: 10.x.x.x
Subnet mask: 255.0.0.0

The first number in the above example would determine our subnet. So if you have 2 devices and you would want to put them in a different subnets you would want the first octet (octet is each number seperated by periods) to be a different number.

Network 1: 10.x.x.x
Network 2: 11.x.x.x

Unless these devices use a router to communicate they would not "talk" properly. Thus giving you 2 different subnets.

I can not get it to work at all. Is there a CD I need to get this set up? I have a Linksys wireless G router and the Belkin F5D7130 plugged in to it. But I have no range.

You don't need a CD - there is a web interface. First, download the user manual here.

I suspect your problem is the Linksys/Belkin combination. Linksys by default uses a subnet of 192.168.1.xxx while Belkin uses 192.168.2.xxx. With a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 (the default for both), no communication would be possible between these two subnets. The "255" in each of those first three octets means they must match exactly.

Either move the Linksys to 192.168.2.xxx or the Belkin to 192.168.1.xxx (and keep the same subnet mask) OR you can change the subnet mask to a broader one (255.255.254.0) that allows the two different subnets to talk to each other. This subnet mask would have to be applied to both devices.

According to the manual, the default address of the Belkin is 192.168.2.254, which leads to your next problem - your PC probably can't connect to the Belkin device. Assuming your PC is configured for the Linksys subnet, the easiest way to communicate with the Belkin is to use a network cable directly linking your PC to the Belkin (may need to be a crossover cable) and manually set your PC's IP address to one in the same subnet as the Belkin, like for example 192.168.2.200 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Then you can open your web browser and point it to the Belkin default address, as outlined in the manual, and make whatever changes are required.

I have a WNDR3400 and it serves DHCP IP addresses in the range of 192.168.2.x subnet. The routers is connected to the another local subnet 192.16.1.x I want the computers on the 192.168.2.x to be...

You need to set the subnet mask correctly on the machines so the machines can see traffic on both subnets. If DCHP is issuing the IP address of each subnet, it's also issuing the subnet mask. You should be able to configure both routers to issue a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 and that would give your computers on either subnet visibility to both networks. Make sure to configure only one of these routers as the gateway and make sure both routers agree which one is the gateway to the Internet otherwise some of the computers won't have Internet access.

I cant figure out my gateway or subnet mask code on my xbox 360 so now i cant connect to my computer and use xbox live

A default gateway is usually 192.168.1.1 and your subnet mask should auto fill in to 255.255.255.0.
To check it properly, go to Network connections on your pc.
Start/Control panel/network connections. And check the status of your connection. Then go to the 2nd tab 'Support' and it will show it.

The subnet mask

To change you subnet mask, go to control panel. look for network settings. select your internet. Right-click and properties. Look for subnet mask options (Try TCP/IP) If your subnet mask settings arent on automatic, put it to auto, if they are on auto, manually type in 255.255.255.0 (That is what is supposed to be)
