How do you unlock a locked carriage?

The carriage on my recently acquired olivetti LETTERA 35l portable typewritter is locked in the center position. The lever for locking/unlocking, at least what appears to be pointed to in the instructions, moves up and down but doesn't release the carriage. Is there something else that should be tweaked at the same time, or is this just busted? Thank you for any help.

Thanks, arnolt3048. Following your instructions, plus prying the jammed release lever with a screwdriver, finally unlocked the carriage.

The solution is not right--there is a carriage return release lever on the far right of the typewriter, that engages a notch on the underside of the roller/carriage return--push it forward to release the lever and you are in business--it has a spoon shaped end and its on the right side

Try using the TAB or space bar to move it. If that dosn't work, there may be a problem in the mecanism. If you get to this point, try moving it manually, just a little bit, very careful. Daniel

Olivetti Lettera 22 Typewriter carriage does not move

There are two ways to deal with that (before taking you olivetti to an authorized dealer):
  1. There's a lock key under the carriage. Have you unlocked it?
  2. The carriage might have been locked by a piece of paper or something else. Release it (pull it) and clean its passage (there is a button you press in order to release it - proceed with care).

We would like to find an ink roller for an olivetti Lettera 35 typewritter

The lettera takes a DIN spool ribbon, very hard to find you may be able to find a universal spool that will work. A General Ribbon T4 or you can wrap a ribbon onto your spools.

Did anyone answer the problem of unlocking the carriage on the olivetti lettera 22? thankyou

There is a small lever on the right side of the machine under the carriage that is meant to lock the carriage for transport. Press this down.

What is carriage lock ?

Carriage lock locks the carriage in the center so that it does not move around when you put it in the carrying case.It should be a metal slide on the frame.

Locked 35l

To the right, below the platen roller knob, there is a silver lever. It can only be depressed (locked) when the platen is in the central position Raise the lever to release the roller.

Carriage release

try jiggling the carraige around a bit and then try using that lever thats on the right side of the carraige. you might even try both at once to see what frees it up. i had the same problem and it worked for me. That's the right tab, it may be in a jammed position so it wont open properly.
