Check to make sure the manual focus/auto focus switch on the lens is set to A. Make sure the lens is completely mounted to the camera and locks securely. If this does not help, or if the lens was dropped, then you should consider buying a new lens. the cost of fixing the old lens may be at least half of the cost of buying a new one.

Hi. I have this same problem. Have you managed to fix it yet? I've been told that it would cost £100 to fix it, plus a charge of £20 to send it away.

Nikon currently lists two 18-55 AF-S DX and two 55-200 AF-S DX lenses. One in each pair has vibration reduction, the other does not. The ones with VR in the name have it, otherwise it doesn't.
VR isn't exactly an option. If it wasn't built into the lens initially, you can't add it later. A lens either has it or it doesn't, though if a lens has VR it can be switched off.

hi there,
the motor inside your lens might have been broken,
was it fell down or hit something before?
if it`s still in warranty, you can claim it to Nikon Service Center
hope this post will help
That's the Nikon error message for a lens with aperture ring set to something other than the minimum (i.e. highest number).
The camera insists on controlling the aperture ring, and to do so, the ring must be set to the minimum setting.
Unless it is a "G" lens, which has no aperture ring whatsoever.
The camera body sets the aperture of the lens wide open while
auto-focusing, and displaying through the viewfinder. When it comes
time to flip the mirror up and take a picture, the camera dials the
aperture to the setting you (or the camera) have selected.
