08-19-11/ E. Coast USA! Greetings: I purchased the Acer M-264 on around Feb 2010. I am a musician / recording studio engineer and work in an environment called DAW (see what that means in my blog): http://youdawithere.blogspot.com/p/what-is-daw.html I've upgraded to external devices which will allow me to convert audio to digital for DAW and also midi keyboard interface: http://www.motu.com/products/midi/lite Bottom line is that my Acer M-264's CPU is @ 1.60 GHz with a recent RAM upgrade to 2 GB. I need to upgrade to at least a CPU for P4 @ 1 GHz (or faster). I'm presuming this is a mother board upgrade thing regarding all this concerning the M-264. Can this be done and for how much? Thanks! Re, MH~

SOURCE: Can I upgrade my 2.8 Ghz CPU with the 3 2 GHz dual

as long as the socket is exactly the same as the processor you are trying to upgrade to you should be good. As far as memory goes you can use a faster ddr2 chip but you have to find out what the maximum capacity is on each slot. Most newer computers can support 1gb+ per slot. Always make sure you install ram in pairs and in the proper slots.

Have you used a shotgun microphone before? Is there any changes you need to do in the recording setup to use shotguns?

First you need to get the understanding for the use of a shotgun mic.
It's ment to be used for movies, live recordings, and mic mixing.
So for mic mixing you need to get all the mics for the musicians leveled and then you mix the whole studio sound together by getting a level of how all sound is in sync.
I hope this was helpful.

Studio Recording at Home; Part 1

For all of the musicians who want to record their demo, or even your next album, without paying pricey studio fees, this is the tip for you!

First, let me say that it doesn't matter what DAW software you're using, as long as you're familiar with it and can navigate it easily.

For that "full" sound that you hear on most recordings on CD and radio, here's a what you've gotta do:

4 guitar tracks (two for each side of the stereo image, pan two out just a bit farther than the others).

2 bass tracks (one recorded direct in [DI], the other amped)

A single drum track

Vocals to taste

For the guitars, if you don't have an amp, or the equipment to record an amped guitar, there are plenty of amp simulation programs available. If you are using an amp, you'll want to place the mic in front of the amp, slightly to the side, pointed at the midway point between the center and the edge of the speaker.

For bass, recording DI without a DI box can be a pain. That's where the amp sims come into play. Record two tracks simultaneously, and only apply the amp sim to one track.

That's all for this tip. Stay tuned for part Deux of Studio Recording at Home!
