RZT50 Kawasaki 141 Hours, engaging the PTO the engine would shut down. Went out and started mower, engaged the mower
engine runing just fine. Cut 2 strips,,,,,,,grass was not being cut.
Stopped. Stopped.....smoke (big time) coming off of what I thought was the engine. Looked underneath the mower and all of
the smoke appeared to be coming from a "clutch".....Engine, below that a pulley, what appears to be a clutch and another pulley. The smell is of a bad clutch.
Does this sound right? If so do you have a general idea of the cost of repair. I went to the Cub Cadet website to find the part but not sure what I would need.

Engine valves need adjusting.
symptoms: starts ok, runs until engine reaches max temp loses power then stops. can't restart when hot. once restarted runs for a while stops again.
There is very little clerance in these valves and temperature alters the lenth by a few thou and the valve don't close fully losing compression, once cold the valves shrink back enough to create enough compression to start again.
Does this only happen when the engine is warm or at operating temperature or all the time even when cold? In older engines, a 'bad ignition coil' would fail when the engine warmed up and would not start again until cool or at ambient temperature.
There is somthing in the PTO that is binding up. I am assuming the PTO is for the mower blades. The belt(s) could be binding up, not on the pulleys, etc. The blades should turn by hand easily.
if the pto bearing is locked up it will stop a motor dead this is a common problem. You will have to get a new clutch assemble. The other thing that it could be is the deck has a locked up spindle.
I have the same mower. The wires do need to be connected. It is a safety feature on the cubs. The engine will not start if the electric PTO is engaged. I just went into the garage, pulled the pto lever out to engage, pushed down brake, tried to start and it would not start. I suggest reattatching the wires and trying it. Hope this helps.
