Filter basket opening during brewing

I believe this problem is caused by the grounds and coffee "dust" flying everywhere when grinding. Combine the debris with hot water and steam and then it gets into all of the mechanical/moving parts and gums them up when the machine dries up again. It leaves a tar-like resin behind (yuck). This prevents the latch inside of the basket assembly from fully engaging and voila, the coffee-barf problem begins. I keep one of those cans of compressed air nearby and periodically "blast" out the left and right slides of the filter basket. I also blast out the grounds from the carafe lid/float. I use one of those cans normally used for dusting off electronics and it comes with a straw, which fits into the crevices nicely.This works best when the coffee maker is completely dried out. The grounds get into everything if you don't keep up with it, you will be surprised how much gunk gets into the parts. I found that using this coffee maker requires a bit of preventative maintenance, but it makes the best coffee for me and I wouldn't let these problems prevent me from buying this machine, by the way. Mine is about 5 years old and I use it every day. When I have coffee at other peoples' house, it tastes like ****. I always open the top cover and let everything dry out after brewing. Also, I wash all of the parts after every cycle and completely dry everything out before using again. I haven't had the problem with the door popping open during brewing anymore. Just remember to keep everything DRY!

Push the permanent filter's basket handle all the way down and then reclose the filter basket drawer lid. There is a pretty flimsy piece of plastic holding it in, though - may require replacement.
