If you have an analog unit the humidity extraction knob should be turned to Maximum.

If you have an LED screen, the arrow down button is what determines the amount of humidity to be removed and maintained. In this case, the lower the number does mean less humidity.

On an analog unit, it's the higher numbers that determine the lower humidity levels.

I hope this helps you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

What is a good number setting to set dehumidifier on this spring? Higher number or lower?

You can start at a lower number, and then increase it as the season progresses and gets more humid. One way to adjust is use an inexpensive humidity meter to see how well the unit is working and maintaining your desired level. Many thermometers have a humidity meter included with them. When the meter shows humidity is increasing, you can raise the setting as needed.

What is the optimal setting for controller dial

If you asking where the humidity extraction knob should be set for optimal humidity extraction. It should be set just below Maximum. Im assuming you have a manually controlled unit, rather than one with an LED screen. If that's not the case lower the numbers using the air down button to 35%.

Hope this helps you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

I have a Haier 65 pint dehumidifier. When I press the control button to lower the humidity setting, the word On comes up and I do not see numbers lowering.

Let's start from the beginning. Turn the Master ON/OFF Switch to OFF. Unplug the unit for 5 minutes. Then plug the unit back end, and turn the Master ON/OFF Switch to ON. Now, lower the the humidity extraction level to 40%, by using the Arrow Down Button. You will need to lower it by pushing the button for each % setting. DO NOT push and hold the Arrow Down Button.

Doing the above should solve the problem.

No water goes into storage tank

If by "no water goes into the storage tank", you mean it does not appear to be removing any humidity. Then you will need to do the following as, there are 5 basic, but solvable reason for what you described. Please pay particular attention to numbers 1 & 22

1. The humidity extraction level is set to HIGH. Lower it to 32-35%. If you have manually controlled
model, set the control knob on Maximum.

2. Air intake filter is dirty or clogged. Turn unit OFF, & Unplug the
Unit, before removing to inspect & clean it, if necessary. If washed,
allow filter to completely dry before reinstalling. DO NOT operate
the unit without the filter.

3. Obstructed air flow. Maintain a minimum of 12 to 18" of clear air
space around the entire unit.

4. Cooling coils are dirty and need to be cleaned. Use warm water & dish washing liquid to
clean the coils. Rinse and wipe dry. Apply a light coating of WD40 to the coils.

5. Ambient air temperature at floor level is between 40 - 60 degrees.
dehumidifiers do not work well between those temperatures
(Unless, you have a Low Temp Unit). This applies mainly to
where the air temperature at floor level is colder than at shoulder
level
in basement applications. Raising the unit up off the floor,
onto a sturdy table, counter top, etc, that can handle the weight
of the unit, plus a full tank of water, will usually resolve this
problem.

If none of the above solves the problem, it may be a case of the compressor needs to be recharged with refrigerant gas or that the humidity condenser sensor has failed. These things usually occur in units that are 5 years old or older. It's rare in a unit younger than that. But, it can happen.

Hope this helped you to troubleshoot and solve the problem.

Haier model hdn455 serial number 05021110 it runs but has never taken a drop of water out of the air, so it just keeps running

The problem, may very well be, that the humidity extraction level is set too high. Lower it to 35% and see what happens. Keep in mind, the lower the percentage of the moisture/humidity setting, the more it extracts from the household air. The higher the setting, the less it extracts from the household air.

Also, remove and check the air intake filter to see if that needs to be cleaned. It should be cleaned at least twice a week during the operating season.

Hope this helped you troubleshoot and solve the problem. Please let me know. Thanks.

I have purchaced two maytag dehumidifiers M7DH45B2A either one works. I cleaned inside and out blew out the coils with air. Motor runs but will not take out the humidity.

You may have the humidity level set to high. Keep in mind, the higher the number on your LED screen, (if your units have LED display) the more humidity remains in the house. Lowering the numbers on the screen (to 45%), should have a better affect.

Hope this helps you. Please let me know.

Humidity reading is 16% when actual humidity is 46%

Running a dehumidifier when the ambient temperature is to low will cause freeze-ups. Also running it when the dew point of the moisture in the air is to low will cause it to freeze up when you set it to low which would be a higher number on the set point.

The hand written number on the probe casing is probably a quality control inspector number.
