We have SONY Model SDT-5000 4mm Cartridge Tape Drive that is not working. It is off an old Data General Aviion Unix System. The DG Model is #6885. Can you help?

The SONY SDT-5000 is off an old Data General Aviion UNIX Computer. The drive is getting power but fails to read or write -- the System ejects the cartridge when you put it into the drive. My question can I use a standard SONY Model SDT-5000 or do I have to have one specifically for the Data General? Also, is there somewhere to send it in to be repaired or refurbished? Thanks!

What is the drive doing or not doing?

Do you have power?

Does it accept a tape?

If yes, does it rewind the tape?

Is this an internal or is it enclosed in a chassis?

I could help if I had more information about the problems your experiencing? You said that the tape drive is not working, but you didn't say what was wrong with it? What is it doing? Does it turn on, but it won't record a back up? Is it a problem with your system not recoginzing the drive? Have you checked to see if your system recognizes it? Did you download and install a driver before connecting the drive to your system? What is your operating system? Win Xp? Win 7? Vista? Does the light come on when you put a tape in the drive to signal that power is going to the drive? All of these questions are very relevant. There is not link for requesting a reply of confirmation on a paid question through Fixya. If you could go to your question on Fixya and use the reply or comment link to provide the above information I will help you solve this problem.

Ive just bought an old sony dat drive SDT-5000 and want to use the external housing frome one I already have. Does anyone know how to set the jumpers? I can supply an image of this if it helps

supply an image (and would be great if you could supply image from old broken one and new one)

I'm a bit confused though: if you have an internal working sdt-5000 that you want to put into an external broken sdt-5000, it should be as simple as getting the enclosure open, then swapping the internal drives; i.e. external enclosures usually still use the same spec internal drive so it would just be an ide or scsi connector cable.

Anytime I try to backup or copy a 33GB data file on a 40GB or 72GB Data cartridge, it requests for more data cartridge even after formatting the data cartridge prior to starting the process. Sometimes, the...

Because the DAT72 can copy 72GB with 2:1 compressed, and it's native capability is 36GB in the most. So you can try to copy less than 30GB data to it or try to enable the drive's compress mode.

Tar /dev/st0 can't write: error

Sounds like your tape drive or possibly the tape you are using is faulty.
check the following:
#1 - use a different tape
#2 - check that the read-only is not enabled on the tape(s)
#3 - run diagnostics on the drive (if it's come with software for diagnostics).
#4 - return it to the supplier to test and replace if under warranty.

Exabyte-220 Tape Library with a 8900 Mammoth drive. Tape cartridge is stuck in the drive - had a power failure during boot of the library. Can press the eject button and hear the tape rewind but the...

These drives are a right pain in the neck!

There is no easy way for an end user to remove the tapes and they are a terrible drive (certainly unless you are using a unix/linux server with all data on this server and not on another networked machine)

My suggestion would be to buy a new drive/library!

Failing that try sending the drive to www.tape-drive-repair.com who should be able to help - but these Mammoth drives are so awful they almost sent exabyte bust so i wouldnt invest too much money in keeping it going. Better to upgrade to an HP LTO4 desktop and cut your losses - Again these guys should be able to help with an upgrade

Hi!!!!! I hav installed UNIX os in 1 drive..... Now the other three drives showing some problem .... So with out any harm of data to unix drive.....i can re-installation for the other three or not

I would suggest using a "Live" Unix system disk to fix the file system problem. Sometimes file system locking by the host operating system will cause problems accessing secondary HDDs. Try the free Knoppix system (www.knopper.net), this system works from a CD so that you have complete access to all of your drives. Use this to move/copy/save data so that the drives with problems can be formatted/reallocated.

Unlocked tapes recognized as locked

this is probably due to a stuck microswitch in the tape drive unit as the locked tag presses a microswitch when loaded it is possibly these microswitches that are failing, as one of the switches detects if a tape is loaded and the other detects is a tape is locked, so problems with these switches would mean that it cannot detect if the tape is loaded properly.
