The microwave was turned on by mistake with nothing inside. It was supposed to operating as a timer, but the timer button had not been corectly depressed. It ran for 10 or 15 minutes, got very hot, and when the mistake was discovered, it was turned off. Then everything went dead. No interior light and no light on the front panel. Is there any hope for this unit?

Key clue is table does not move---All microwaves with a table have a lever switch that is engaged when door closes--only can get at from inside the unit----it prevents the unit from operation if door not closed.
What happens from closing door a lot is the switch with a lever arm can come loose or even if snapped into a plastic holder break out of the holder.
The part of the oven called the "magnetron" (this part is what creates/generates the microwave energy that heats the food or liquid) is burned out, the cost to repair is more this part is more than the cost to replace with the cost of Microwaves so depressed by the stagnant economy.
Without a load (food or water) to absorb the microwave energy the microwaves will bounce back into the waveguide and on to the magnetron antennae causing damage. Usually there is a lot of arcing and noise when there is nothing inside the oven cavity which alerts you to the problem. I cannot say for sure if it destroyed the magnetron.
This happens because of a bad door switch . The plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door .
You already know it can be a costly mistake. Had it happen in my own home!!!!
Several things can be wrong:
1. The Fuse inside the unit
2. The High Voltage Capacitor
3. The Power Diode
4. (bad news) The Magnetron.
There is an RF window that can be bad also as when a microwave is run with no load it can be burned. It is supposed to help protect the Magnetron from reverse flow RF and help disperse the RF inside the unit.
The next question is: "Are you going to talke this by yourself or have it repaired?" We can you advise on what to do but there are some hazards that you need to be aware of if your going top give it a go..... Just reply here. Thanks.
Hello jeresmer... the timer merely counts doiwn the time the microwave is supposed to be active however it does not necessarily mean the microwave is operating properly. It is possible you have a bad magnetron, hv capacitor or filamsnt transformer ( among other things) that may be wrong ..How old is the microwave and which model is it?
