Craftsman 20 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model Logo

I have a Craftsman Model 917,272751,18 hp lawn tractor. Problem: the engine shuts down and will not restart when I move the throttle to the slow position prior to emptying the grass containers. It also runs a little rough and backfires occasionally when moving the throttle from slow to the run position. I must lift the hood and move the tractor into the shade for 15-30 minutes before it will restart. The tractor has run well for years, this is a recent issue. I have changed the spark plug. When the engine is first started (cold) started, I can move the throttle to the slow position and the engine will run normally. Thanks for your help, Larry

It seems like the valves are not working too well, backfire indicates that the valve is not closing properly and the fuel is getting pushed past the the valve and igniting in the hot exahaust pipe. It is possible that this tracktor is overdue for an oil change, an oil change would prevent damage to the valves and help cool the engine. I think your problem could be due to low oil level either currently or in the recent past.

As you explained it runs normally on a cold start and then gives troubles as it gets hotter, I think it is overheating and new oil will help keep it cool and get it running smoothly. However it is possible that the valves are damaged slightly, this is confirmed if the tracktor is low on power.

I think it might also be possible that the carberator is a bit stuck/gummy. Clean out the carberator and airfilter.

Take care!

Backfires are caused by unburned fuel, after you shut off the mower, and you try to restart it, if you have any leaks, it will push any unburnt fuel towards the muffler, and that will ignite once it gets in a hot muffler. First try starting it at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. I also suggest you try shutting down the motor at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle.

What this problem usually means is you need to rebuild your carburetor, with this poor quality ethanol fuel they force us to use these days, it will eat up your gaskets and rubber seals inside your carb.

What I found that helped me with my mower, was using non-ethanol gas. Its hard to find and is usually expensive, but that solved most of the problems I was having with my 10 year old craftsman mower, which has the 17.5 kohler motor.

How can get my engine to power down to idle before shutting down?

sound like the idle is turned up to high look for a screw on the throttle shaft

Craftsman Riding Mower (24 HP 42 in cut Model 289254) with throttle issue. Very slow in 6th gear

follow the throttle cable all the way down to the engine. Have some one move the throttle up and down to see if the throttle plate is opening and closing all the way. You can loosen the screw holding the throttle cable and move it back and forth to see if it will allow the throttle plate to open and close correctly. It may have slipped when the assembler tried to tighten it.

I start the engine and it sputters at fast idle and then eventually shuts off.

I think that after you start the engine you need to move the throttle lever off what you are calling fast idle (which is full choke). Simply slide the throttle lever down until it smooths out and runs properly.

Why does my lawn tractor tractor rev way up when the throttle is on slow and the choke is off?

that could be caused by a sticky float valve--remove the bottom of the carb and make sure the float valve moves up and down very freely

Craftsman mower with 18.5 hp Intek Will run wide open only, regardless of throttle position. Linkage appears to be okay. Stuck float? What about the bowl electric solenoid valve?

check the lever biside the mower that connects to your carb. move it by hand while running if no change the governor has broke,, need to take engine off and replace, but if you move it and it slow down change spring

The engine starts in when the choke is on (however a lot of smoke) and once I move the throttle, the engine shuts off. Any suggestions???

Sounds like possible the engine gaskets need to be replaced.. Sounds like head gasket may be bad and losing compression.. Had same problem on montgomery wards tractor few years ago. Had engine overhauled and now works good..

Starts OK but after about 15 or 20 minutes starts losing power and after moving throttle up and down for five minutes or so to keep going dies After cooling for twenty or thirty minutes will start and go...

When your ignition coil get to engine temp. it will begin to lose its power, therefore your engine will eventually shut down, when it cools it will start up again,
Good luck
