I have hp pavilion dv2000, when I plug in dc cord it switches on without pressing power switch. Than I'm able to switch it off and on. All lights on panel and motherboard switch on also. CPU fan switches on only for few seconds and then turn off. LCD shows no activity at all. I tested RAM in other HP machine and it is ok. HDD no activity also. So the CPU or motherboard is wrong. Am I right? ;)

Dv2000 zero support now at hp,
2006? year.
so does the VGA port on the rear of PC work. to a desktop monitor
yes, then the mobo is ok. but not screen.
easy no?
i can make the mobo run on a table. vga connected.
with Fn+F4 toggled on and external USB keyboard, I can activate the external screen.
steps. are as follows. in proper order
1: remove that shorted huge battery, there. get it out of there.
2: make sure the power pack reads (VM) 19vdc at the jack.
3: new coin cell if voltage on its pins below 2.9v... yah?
4: get BIOS screens working FIRST. disconnect HDD and DVD drive. now.
5: go to 1 ram stick bank 0 (try 2nd one by self)
6: does the flashlight trick work on that CCFL screen,?
7: remove all modules from MOBO cept CPU and 1 stick RAM?
we call that the strip down tests.\
8: beep codes, or Caps lock key flash codes? what?

BIOS screens have to work, or mobo is dead.
has anyone been playing with BIOS doing crazy things like flashing it.>? yes, oops now you bricked it. then what (ask)

if pc is 2008 that is the solderball from hell year.
see that and the CCFL test here.

    so its an old laptop.

    does it run with the battery (main large) out;

this always 1st test, after all they love to short cells inside.

next are BIOS screens. we get those working first.

or all else is doomed, see?

BIOS screens work with hdd and DVD drives removed. see?

F11 will be dead sure, with any HDD remove so forget F11 for now.

    F11 is HP restore.

    does the mobo beep codes.

does the CAPS lock LED lamps flash codes?

if you remove all mobo things cept CPU and RAM 1 strick

    does BIOS work,

if all that fails try a new 19vdc 100w (65w min) power pack,

if the shop voltmeter shows 19vdc at the mobo jack

then its ok and mobo bad.

the above I do with external VGA monitor connected, fn+F4 toggled.

    LCD , bad

if only the LCD is dead, (means to me never any text ever)

    just it dead, then we

first see if pc is 2008 PC, the solder ball from hell PCs.

the DV2000 up have CCFL lamps

that all die soon. all do. go dim or dead.

so does the flash light trick work?>

see the flash light trick>?? (DEAD CCFL tubes) back lamps dead.

    http://www.pcdied.com/monitors.html#Lapt...

that PC has VGA port on the rear, it sure does work

    even with bad screen inside.

id be all over VGA, what if that works perfectly?>??

carbon dated, i see 2006 reviews on said PC.

so it may be Solderball failure free.

this PC is retired ( obsolete ) at HP.

    see this, all modules pulled

cpu, there ,1 stick ram. the screen is stock internal screen

but i can remove it and plug in any desktop screen on the

    rear.

the USB keyboard on mine, the BIOS keys all work

i press ESC then F1 to get hp info screens (any one)

the fan must spin, under BIOS

if not its packed in lint or power pack is bad. (in most cases)

note case is missing totally here. its SPACE PC we call it.

SOURCE: My Intel D102GGC and Mercury 915GLV motherboard not wake up

Is this new ram or have you used it in this machine previously?

A couple of things can cause what you describe, one of them being the wrong voltage of ram. This page contains the list of memory that your system can use, check the part number on your current ram in google to find out what voltage it runs at (the recommended voltage for your board is 1.8v).

Other than that you may want to do a CMOS reset by changing the jumper block (should be described in your mobo manual), powering the machine on briefly, power it down (unplug) and return the jumper to it's original location. Now try to post the machine.

Pavilion dv4 1220us blink code 1

have you unplugged, remove battery, plug in, reboot? Try another Cord/Charger with the EXACT same power specs. Has there been any damage to the AC jack due to pulling on the cord while plugged in? Verify your DC voltage at cord plug that fits into the AC laptop jack. Have you reseated/replaced the Memory Mods? The CMOS battery? The HDD ? It sounds like a Power issue as it the Cord/Charger/AC/DC Transformer? Hard to say from here without a MultiMeter to verify. HP Pavilion dv8 not starting up

Ya know........Pavilion dv8 is a Series of Notebook PC's.

Encompasses a LOT of models in the series.

Have no idea of which LED in front you are referring to.

Do know;

1) Test the AC adapter (Charger) with an economical multimeter.
Average cost is $5 to $12.
Set to DC Voltage, and check the output voltage of the AC adapter.

As far as I can tell the DV8 series uses 18.5 to 19 Volts. (DC)
Use an AC adapter that is rated at 90 Watts, NOT 65 Watts; if using a replacement AC adapter.

The port on the laptop that the AC adapter plugs into is a DC Power Jack. (DC_IN)
The plug end on the power cable from the AC adapter, and plugs into the DC Power Jack, has a Center Hole, and an outside cylindrical metal shell.

The Center Hole is the Positive connection. This is where the Positive (Red) probe lead of the multimeter goes.
The outside cylindrical metal shell is the Negative connection. This is where the Negative (Black) probe lead of the multimeter touches.

Also have an assistant gently wiggle the power cord TO AC adapter; and power cable FROM AC adapter to laptop.
Intermittent reading indicates a broken wire, or wires.

DC Power Jack LED lights up? Means nothing to me. I want to know the FULL DC Voltage is getting TO the laptop, and there are no breaks in the wires of the power cable, or power cord of AC adapter.

THEN AC adapter checks out.

2) AC adapter checks out?
What condition is the DC Power Jack in?
Battery removed, use the eraser end of a No.2 pencil, and GENTLY see if you can wiggle the Center Pin around.

ANY perceptible movement of the Center Pin, means replacement of the DC Power Jack.
Fortunately for this series the DC Power Jack is connected to a cable with wires, and they end in a plug connector. Which plugs into the motherboard.
It is now a DC Power Harness.

HP calls it a Power Connector Cable.

http://www.amazon.com/PAVILION-Series-DC-IN-POWER-HARNESS/dp/B005WMWMMU

3) Next in line are the Power MOSFET's, in the power circuit section, on the motherboard.

!O_O!

MOSFET;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOSFET

Power MOSFET;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_MOSFET

Should be on the motherboard, near where the Power Connector Cable plugs in.
Rectangular shaped with 8 'legs'. ('Legs' are J-Leads)

Believe one or more to be the problem.
Typed the rest above because it is a power flowchart, and when diagnosing always go through the steps.
Would s-uck to replace a motherboard, when the problem was an AC adapter, it's power cord, or the DC Power Harness.

This is more on the subject, by using the HP pavilion dv6000 series, and Pavilion dv9000 series of Notebook PC's; as examples,

http://mayohardware.blogspot.com/2010/04/important-parts-on-dv6000-and-dv9000.html

Further this is to show the availability of the Fairchild Semiconductor - FDS6679 - Power MOSFET, and Alpha & Omega Semiconductor - AO4407 - Power MOSFET,

http://www.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=FDS6679

Scroll down.

http://www.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=AO4407

AO4407 has been phased out. Let's look at one of the cross-reference examples given,

That is correct. $1.01 USD for a FDS6679, and 78 cents for a substitute AO4407.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uiroWBkdFY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjpNbuOrOuw

Also check the MLCC's (They are also SMD. Surface Mount Device)
Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitor

Here are examples. Not correct values, Capacitance, (MicroFarad's), and Voltage,

These will be close to the Power MOSFET's.
See if any are burned, or blistered.

HP Pavilion Dv6000z will not turn on

Florida Bob,

Battery is part of the power/charging circuit. As you have found it needs to be in place; kaput or not.

Believe your problem to be Power MOSFET's.

This will explain why,

(The Mayohardware article)

Now you may know what is wrong, and where to get replacement parts, and how to replace.

This is the HP Support link to the free Service Manual,

USE an ESD wrist strap.
Use a multi-compartment container for the various screws you will remove.
Label each compartment for the area the screw/s come out of.
SOME screws look VERY similar to other screws.
Advise DO NOT mix them up.

HP Pavilion DV2000 will not start when power button pressed

Could be a bad;
1) AC adapter (Charger),
Or
2) DC Power Jack, (Jack that the AC adapter plugs into on the laptop),
Or
3) Power On switch, (Power Button Board),
Or
4) Display Lid Switch Module,
Or
5) Power MOSFETs on the motherboard,
Or
6) Ceramic Capacitors on the motherboard.

1) AC adapter:
General example,

http://www.amazon.com/Original-HP-65W-Adapter-Pavilion/dp/B002QCUIZC/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1350152535&sr=8-6&keywords=ac+adapter+hp+dv2000

The plug end that plugs into the laptop has a Center Hole, and a cylindrical metal outside shell.
The center hole is the Positive connection.
The cylindrical metal shell on the outside is the Negative connection.

Multimeter function knob set to DC Voltage, the Positive (Red) probe lead goes to the Center Hole.
The Negative (Black) probe lead touches the cylindrical metal shell.

[An inexpensive multimeter can be purchased for as little as $5 to $12. Available in a multitude of stores. An auto parts store is but one example, or look on the checkout aisle racks of major discount stores.
If just a symbol, the symbol for DC Voltage is a dotted line over a solid line. More expensive multimeters have an auto detect feature, that sense when the multimeter is connected to AC voltage, or DC voltage )

You should read 18.5 Volts (DC)

While testing have an assistant gently wiggle the cable from AC adapter to laptop, and the power cord to the AC adapter. A fluctuation of the reading indicates there are broken wires.

AC adapter checks out OK?
Go to the DC Power Jack.

The DC Power Jack on the laptop may have DC_IN next to it.
It has a Center Pin, and surrounding metal shell.
Battery REMOVED, use a No.2 pencil, and see with the easer if you can move the center pin.

If so the jack needs to be replaced.

The DC Power Jack for this model series is attached to wires, that end in a small white plug.
The small white plug plugs into the motherboard.
Easier to replace, than models that have the DC Power jack soldered directly, to the motherboard.
It's a DC Power Harness, and HP labels it a Power Connector Cable.

HP 430462-001 for models that have a UMA motherboard.
HP 430461-001 for models using an Intel processor.

DC Power Jack checks out OK?
Power On switch.

In the list click on -
HP Pavilion dv2000 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide

This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
After you click on the above file name, it may take up to 30 seconds before the first page comes up.

The PDF reader page numbers, and the actual manual page numbers, do not match. When I refer to a page it is the PDF file page.
Go to Page 141 - Switch Cover
Pages 142 and 144 have more details on the Power Button Board.
(Power Button Board is HP part number 417084-001)

How to test?
Multimeter set to OHM. Straight pins (2) in the socket holes of the removed, Power Button Board's cable connector.
Positive probe lead to one pin, Negative probe lead to the other straight pin.
Press the Power On button.

ANY reading indicates a good Power On switch.
No reading of course means a bad one.
(Remember; the Power On switch is a Momentary Contact Switch.
You will just get a brief reading on the multimeter, if good)

Or you can use a small flat tip Jewelers screwdriver, and TEMPORARILY touch the two contact pins on the motherboard, where the Power Button Board's cable plugs into.

Page 179 for the Display Switch Lid Module,
(HP 417087-001)

http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/HP,Laptop,Part,417087001.aspx

Unplugging the Display Switch Lid Module from the motherboard, and pressing the Power On button, starts the laptop, you need a new lid module.

Power Button Board, (Power On switch), and Display Switch Lid Module checks OK?

Motherboard problems.
There are Power MOSFETs on the motherboard. These are located close to where the plug of the Power Connector Cable, plugs into the motherboard. (DC Power Harness)

The Power MOSFETs control;
Whether the Battery needs a full charge, or a trickle charge.
Whether the laptop is to just run off of the AC adapter, or Battery.

Look to see if any are blackened, burned, or blistered.
Information using the HP Pavilion dv6000, and Pavilion dv9000 series of Notebook PC's,

http://mayohardware.blogspot.com/2010/04/important-parts-on-dv6000-and-dv9000.html

Just to show the average cost of a Fairchild Semiconductor - FDS6679 - Power MOSFET,

http://www.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=FDS6679

One dollar and one penny USD.

Looking at the second photo down on the Mayohardware blog link, look at AO4407.
(Alpha and Omega Semiconductor)

Look to the right of the Yellow circled AO4407. That small rectangular shaped object, with a dark wide band on it, is a Ceramic Capacitor.
There is one above it of the same size, one above that, and one to the right of the top one.

Average cost of them is around 62 cents to 80 cents.

Average cost of a replacement motherboard is around $40 to $60 on Ebay.

That does it for me right now. Post additional questions in a Comment.

My HP dv2000 shuts down and does not turn back on. The power cord is connected but the charging light is not on.

Your DC connector on the system board is loose:

Problem symptoms:

  1. Laptop randomly shuts down without any warning.
  2. Power LED and battery charge LED start flickering when you wiggle the power cord or the AC adapter tip on the back or your laptop.
  3. The battery will not get charged.
  4. When you plug AC adapter, the laptop appears to be dead and there is no LED activity at all (DC-IN jack on the system board is broken).

If it is under warranty, HP will repair it. If not , read this:

Hp pavilion dv2000 lights switch on but boot or

Hi

Thank you for your query

Please try the folowing

1) Remove ALL wires and then press and hold the power button in for approx 20 seconds

2) Plug everything back in and then rerty

This may sort the issue out however from what you are descrbing, if there is no boot or display it is highly likely the motherboard and/or the CPU is faulty

I would recommend that you book the PC into a reputable PC repair shop if the above does not work
