Can this model be upgraded from xp 32 bit to windows 7 64 bit with 2.5 gb of memory?

Yes you can however HP only supports Windows XP (32-Bit), Windows Vista (32 and 64 Bit) No official support for windows 7.

However Most modern PC's will run windows 7 and most drivers are available. Upgrade at your own risk.... There might be some drivers that you wont find and may cause problems with your PC.

But why upgrade to 64bit if you are not upgrading memory to 4GB+?

I have encountered a problem while installing Windows XP over Windows 7 on my laptop Compaq CQ62-410-US

Most likely you will have problem trying to install windows XP in a windows 7. It is better to use a virtual machine on your windos 7 instead. Windows XP mode will not work on a Home edition of Windows 7. you can download the Virtual machine in this link: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=4580
Once you have downloaded and install this run it. then install the XP on this mode by -run the virtual machine -go through the setup -insert the installation disk -wait for the installation is complete
Then every time you will run the virtual machine it will go to the XP that you installed.
hope this helps

Want to up grade to xp

This system does support an upgrade form ME to XP but you need to first purchase an upgrade cd.

keep in mind that windows xp will no longer be supported by microsoft and at the price tag of 89-129$USD for the home edition you may just want to buy a cheap replacement computer.

if you do go to upgrade, once you get the cd you boot to ME. place the cd in and follow the instructions. The process is rather simple and straight forward.

Compaq computer and HP generally have all the drivers in XP when coming from ME. You may not have to do anything other than just use the XP upgrade feature.
