Marvin, it could be water dripping into the drain pan under the unit or the metal of the outer shell is cooling off (metal stress). Also, is the drain pan is full the fan blades may be hitting the water, In which case the rear of the unit needs to be tilted down 1/4" to 1/2". So, the water will flow to the rear of the pan and out the drain hole. These sounds are normal and will do no harm. If you want to test this theory, turn the unit OFF & unplug it. If you still hear the ticking sound, it's one of the above.

Hope this helps & thanks for choosing FixYa.

Ummmmm... if MY wall was ticking... I think I would back slowly away, then run like HELL before it slams all the doors shut on you! ;-)

In winter the outside unit sounds like a rubbing/ticking noise

Sounds like ice coming of the coil. That would explain the ticking. The rubbing could be ice buildup before the defrost cycle or it's building on the blades of the fan throwing it of balance a bit.

Won't stop ticking!!!! Why??

The noise could be from the expansion and contraction of the metal from heating up and cooling down. You could try loosen the mounting screws of the unit slightly to see if that helps.

Try mounting on rubber standoffs. The mechanical timers are noisy and when mounted on a wall that amplifies the noisy.

As a test, un bolt it from the wall and see if noise is acceptable. If so, find a cushioned mount.
