Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
I can not tell you how to get it out of it's current mounting position without seeing it. (Just being honest) And the wiring is different for each RV depending on what electrical system the ORIGINAL owner opted for. My experience with RV generator is that you can usually slide them out on rails just far enough to disconnect the wires. Just do yourself a HUGE favor and draw your own wiring diagram.
Number the wires 1 through 8 (
Ok.... here is the diagnostic and service manual:
http://www.kohlerpower.com/onlinecatalog/pdf/tp6196.pdf
See the troubleshooing steps on page 25 and also see sections 4-4 and 4-5 to determine why it is shutting down. First thing check the oil level! The engine has a Low Oil Level and low oil pressure Pressure Sensor. Either one will shut off fuel. Read in section 5 also....
The squalling noise your hearing is probably dry starter bearings. There is not a quick fix for this other than to disassemble the starter and lubricate it. If the bearings in fact dried out you will have to also wipe off the armature shaft area where the bearings are. If you just lubricate it without disassembly it will eventually lock up from the left over residue.
The fuel system is discussed on page 66 of the manual link. This appears to be an LPG powered unit. If it is not LPG powered find your engine number and I will get your engine service manual also so you can locate the fuel pump. (I think this is either the CH or CV740-0035 engine) If I remember correctly the fuel pump is vacuum powered on this engine if it a diesel or gas model. The diesel engine also has a fuel injection pump in addition to a fuel pump. (just depends on what sub model of the 12 RES-L you have. The L usually designates it as an LPG unit.)

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

I believe that this had the magnum 20 HP engine on it. If so this is the service manual for just the engine: http://www.kohlerengines.com/onlinecatal...
This engine has a mechanical fuel pump and is located in the top of the engine. Just follow the fuel line backward from the carb. The fuel pump is the next connection away from the carb.
THe service manual for the genset appears to be TP-5394.pdf I have not downloaded it yet as it is quite slow here at the moment. (3%) Let me know if the link below does not work.

As far as the starter goes... I know I said NOT to do this but.. use some 30 wt oil on the bearings (they are brass oilite) I am reluctant to tell you to take the starter apart as the brushes will break if you have never done it before.
Going to send this off for now so you will have the links. Ask any questions you wish anytime. We will get this up and going again.

The starter is a breeze to disassemble. The problem is getting the brushes held back out of the way to slide the armature back in. The whole thing comes apart by removing 2 through bolts and popping off the end caps after unhooking the main positive lead. The engine manual link I sent you has the starter break down on page 84. (TP-2204) I checked the generator service manual and it just says use the engine manual. Neither one is specific on starter repair. If you have any mechanical abilities at all you can take the starter apart. The hard part is carefully getting the brushes over the armature slip ring. The whole process to take it apart.. clean and lube it is less than 15 minutes. The bearings are in the end caps for this starter. Since the bearing are in the end caps it means the bearings are pretty thin. You can probably get by with just lubricating the bearings with turbine oil. Turbine oil is a paraffin based oil and you can get it in the form of Zoom-Spout Oiler that is in most hardware and appliance parts stores (<-cheap) or Union 76 turbine oil at automotive stores (<-expensive) Lubricate the bendix also (<-the geared piece)
You can take it somewhere to have this done but I would bet they would charge $30 - 50 to do it. Most store front lawn more repair shops will fix these starters.

Thanks so much. Im going to try some of your ideas out asap. However this is not a LP unit, it runs on gasoline from the motor. I have the serial numbers and model numbers. The model number is 5CKM21-RV. The spec number is 101203 and the serial number is 294261. I hope this helps with accurate service manuals cause I could really use them. I got the genny out of the rv today no problem, and am now trying to figure out the best way to get to the starter to take it off. When I do, how do I go about oiling it as you spoke about in the last message?? Also if the model number above tells any info on what kind/ if any fuel pump I have on it, that would be awesome. THanks
Also, this is off of a 1993 rv, and the generator appears to be of around the same year, so the manual you provided last time seems a lil new. Thanks
Thanks again! I have taken off and replaced many starters, but never taken one apart, would I be better off taking it off and taking it somewhere to be oiled/serviced?? Just the starter that is! Would this be very expensive? Thanks
