Hi there,

Some plush pile carpets are unsuitable for use with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a revolving brush. I'd recommend contacting the carpet manufacturer for advice on the correct way to clean it. They may suggest vacuuming it with the brushbar switched off - to do this, turn the brush control on your DC07 to the 'hard floors' setting.

If you have any further concerns, please get in touch with us directly - one of our experts will be happy to provide further assistance. You can call us free on 08002980298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US).

Kind regards,

SOURCE: My dyson vacumn is hard to push on carpeting. How do i fix it?

This happens when the bristles in the brush roll get worn down too short. Put in a new brush roll and the machine will pull itself over the carpet, so you hardly have to push at all.

SOURCE: I have a Dyson DC14

Hello,

This sounds like your roller brush has stopped spinning for some reason. Turn the machine upside down when set to carpeting, and make sure the handle of the vacuum is down, as if you were in the vacuum posistion, and not up like the handle is when you're storing it.

Is your brush roller spinning? If it's not, there are two kinds of agitator brushes on the Dyson DC14, each has it's own troubleshooting.

If your beater brush is perfectly rounded in shape, then you have the newer style Dyson DC14 that doesn't use a clutch mechanism. Either belt has broken, or falled off, and is causing the brush not spin. Here's instructions with a pictorial on how to fix this problem;

Step 1. Unplug the vacuum cleaner.

  • Lay the machine flat on the floor and turn it over so that the base can be viewed.
  • Use a coin to turn the three soleplate fasteners and remove the soleplate as shown.

  • Check the brushbar for blockages and ensure the brushbar is rotating freely by hand.
  • If a blockage is present, carefully use a pair of scissors to cut away any hair and fibres from the brushbar ensuring you do not cut any of the bristles on the brushbar.

If the roller brush still doesn't spin after checking and removing any obstructions, then you need to replace the belt (or clutch if you have the early models). Here's a video that explains how to replace the clutch mechanism on Dyson vacuums;

If this failed to fix your problem, or if you have any other problems or questions, please feel free to just reply using the comment box below, I'm always happy to answer anyones questions or concerns. I hope this helped you. Please do be sure to rate my repair, or leave feedback for me if this helped. This is greatly appreciated by the Fixya community.

Dyson small ball multi floor vacuum cleaner purchased in Australia

Aussie electrical current may be different than our US current. England's is. Converters are needed to plug in a toothbrush in England. Likely Australia is the same. We've lived on a dirt road for 32 years, in New Mexico. We call dust "enchantment." Mostly ignore it. Check out the electrical conversion from them to us. Likely there is way to convert their currency? to ours. Electrical currents.

Worked well until purchased new thick carpet, now can't push it.cleaned &changed all filters. cleaned brush. tried removing rubber string gasket. no help .

Barry,
Most vacuum cleaners will not roll well on real thick carpets. There are only a couple of vacuums out there that will work on thick carpet. The Oreck Magnesium models and most of the Miele vacuums will work on thick carpet and some manufacturers of carpet will tell you to use one of those two brands. Hope this helps!

We had an older dyson vacuum that worked great until it had to be replaced and now our new one it works great on short carpet but is very difficult to push on thicker carpet.

Hi Ronnie, it's Jack at Dyson.

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty using your new Dyson vacuum on this particular type of deeper-pile carpet. It's possible your new machine has higher suction at the cleaner head, and this could mean it needs slightly higher push-force on certain carpets with deeper, denser pile, or thick underlay. You may find it helps to use the vacuum with the brush bar switched - carpet manufacturers will sometimes advise vacuuming deep-pile carpets in this way.

However, I would encourage you to get in touch with us directly so we can take some further details about the issue. When you have your Dyson vacuum easily to hand, please call the Dyson Customer Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU). Our experts will be happy to discuss your concerns.

We'll look forward to speaking with you.

Hi Fran, it's Jack at Dyson.

DC33 is engineered to work effectively on both hard and carpeted flooring. The cleaner head is engineered to adjust automatically for different floor types and carpet piles. You can also turn off the brush bar for hard floors and delicate rugs, using the brush control on the cleaner head.

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty pushing your machine forward on this particular type of new carpeting. If your DC33 worked effectively before the new carpeting was fitted, it doesn't sound like there's an issue with the vacuum itself. However, we'd appreciate the opportunity to take some further details about the issue, and may be able to suggest a resolution. You may also want to consider contacting the carpeting manufacturer directly, as they should be able to recommend the best way of caring for this specific carpeting.

When you have your DC33 easily to hand, please give the Dyson Customer Helpline a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

Dyson instructions

If you have a particularly thick carpet you may wish to turn the brush bar off. This will make the machine easier to push, however it will not vacuum as effectively. Dysons can sometimes feel a little difficult to push when vacuuming carpets because they have such great suction.

My Dyson - DC14 won't push on my new plush carpet, front end

Same issue: new plush carpet, 7 year old tried and true DC14, wouldn't push across regardless of beater brush on or off. Called Dyson this morning, they suggested removing the small gasket between the floor plate and the assembly holding the beater brush. It's about a 12' gasket just under the screws used to remove the floor plate. Pushing is still a bit stiff, but it is a definite improvement. Whew!

Just purchased a new Dyson animal vacuum and cannot push it thru the carpeting. I have it set to the highest pile carpeting but it is impossible to push. Seems to work fine on less thick carpeting.

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties using your Dyson cleaner on this particular carpet. You may want to contact your carpet manufacturer to check it's suitable for cleaning with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a revolving brush. Manufacturers sometimes recommend cleaning certain types of carpeting using suction only.

My dyson vaccum feels heavy and slow when pushing it. Please advise. Thanks

First make sure that brush roll is moving not broken belt....if all ok then try setting height for thick pile carpet lift head a bit this will ease off on a thinner carpet and in turn make it easy to push,
