somebody tampered with internal adjustors seems to me. you can take a screw driver and turn off receive for so many channels but crank it for higher band. It was probably locked on a upper channel for a Friendly chat station say Channel #28. Where they stayed and talked on 1 channel all time. Could be that. Maybe its got broke wires or board on that other set of channels or parts fried, chip bad etc. Get it checked out at CB shop. if you have any knowledge, turn IF to receive and crank up receive inside radio. If don't know anything take to shop..sounds like simple fix to me.
WX is for weather. If you put it on WX, and you do not hear anything, then you need to change the weather station it is on. in wx mode, you change weather channels by pressing channel up and down. To communicate with 2 way, press the cb/wx button so it is on CB mode.
The Cobra 20 NW ST Wx is ( in my opion ) a very poor receiving radio. The ST is a bummer in all Cobra radios. The Static is apparent for the atmospheric conditioons and definally power lines and any high voltage will be picked up. When I get a customer with similiar complaints ( and there are a bunch ) I normally recommend that we turn the receive senativity down a bit. Sorry for this advise.
Open up the radio and look inside of it towards the front of the unit, there should be a small circuit board mounted either in the front center or to either side of the radio. This will be the board for the weather channels, check the all the wires coming from this board and make sure they are connected on both ends, if they are then look on this little circuit board and you should see some small components with tiny slots for a screwdriver to fit. these are the adjustments for the receive function of the weather channels, slowly turn the little slot with a small screwdriver little by little one by one and you should notice some kind of change in the receive on these weather channels if so keep slowly adjusting them until optimum receive level is obtained. If you feel this proceedure is beyond your skill level then I suggest that you carry it to a local CB radio repair shop. If you dont have a local repair shop just go to a truck stop along any interstate and ask the employees or even a trucker if they know where a cb repair shop is and I feel sure there will be one within a few miles of your location. Good luck with your problem.
