Using a universal pleating foot, starts out fine then I break a needle, 5 so far. It hist the pressure plate. Using a straight stitch, needle is centered. Bobbin is treaded correctly. Needle is straight at...

Sounds like the needle is hitting the moving part of the pleater once you get going, getting bent then striking the needle plate too.

Its not going to do the machine any good if you keep striking it with the needle as you'll end up putting the timing out.

As the pleater is a generic type it is probably best to stop trying to use it on your machine.

I keep breaking the needle because when the presser foot is down it hits the plate on the bottom of the machine

Refer to your manual, it gives all sorts of reasons for the needle to break, wrong bobbin size, scratched plate, needle being inserted wrong. If, you do not have your manual go online to
brother-usa.com and download one for free.

Refer to the accessories and you will find one is a darning plate. If you check the section for darning, there will be more information.

Look on the throat plate and there should be a tiny hole on each side of the feed dogs, this is where the plate snaps into place.

If you do not have the plate, set the stitch length to zero, and then tape an index card over the feed dogs with a hole punched out for the needle.

You may use this method forever, or check with your local Brother dealer for the accessory.

HI, my brother xl-2600i is hitting the metal on the bottom not going through to the bobbin. don't know what to adjust. help! thanks in advance.

First, check to ensure your needle is not bent. If its not bent then just adjust your metal plate at the bottom. Loosen the screws and shift the plate back, tighten the back screw first and see if the needle now passes the plate. If not make some more adjustments. Once the needle passes the plate properly, tighten the front screw. Hope that helps.

Needle getes broken

Check to see if your needle plate is gouged or signs that the needle is hitting the plate. If so, you may be pulling a little too hard when the fabric is feeding. Sometimes when you pull too hard, it pulls the needle back and it will hit the plate instead of going into the needle hole and you will break needles. Try just letting the fabric feed itself and you simply guide it to make sure it stays in a straight line.
