Tip & How-To about Compaq Keyboard

Erratic Keyboard typing on laptop

If you are getting erratic keyboard typing (unexpected cursor positioning), verify keyboard driver is up to date. If it is current, remove the keyboard from the laptop (see other sites for directions, but should be easy). Once removed, clean the ribbon contacts using q-tip and isopropyl alcohol. Dry with clean q_tip and reinstall. This may solve the problem without having to purchase new keyboard

Cursor keeps moving to unexpected locations while typing

My laptop does this and so does my Linux computer.
An optical mouse needs to work on a featureless surface. My oak grain desk is not good.
A mouse pad with a picture is also bad.
Use a clear textured surface - like a one colour mouse pad...
Or
Try a new mouse - a cheap one will do for testing. The tail on your mouse may be breaking. (Yes, they do that...)

It seems to happen with optical mice on random pattern surfaces.

Dell Inspiron B130

Hello, this normally happens on laptops. I think that it is from the sensitivity of the touch pad. You would have to check the position of your hands when typing since when your finger happens to touch the pad unexpectedly, the cursor quickly jumps to where ever the mouse pointer is: As a result, whatever you type next will rather go there instead of your current position.
Hope that helps
Thanks

keyboard scramble

You have different keyboard layouts installed.
Standard: qwerty, asdfgh
Dvorak: ‘,.pyf, adeuid

To prevent the keyboard from unexpectedly switching up on you, open your control panel, select Regional and Language Options.

In the Regional and Language Options dialog box, click the languages tab, select the details button at the top of the dialog box.
In the Text services and languages dialog box, under installed services: select the Keyboard United States-Dvorak service and then click the remove button, click ok, click ok.
