Tip & How-To about Breville ESP8XL Espresso Machine
One of the hottest selling items overthe Christmas season was the Keurig line of Coffee brewing machines. Now many of these machines are giving the owners the "DE-SCALE"message. Because many people do not keep track of their manuals thatcome with the machine, they are now wondering how to do this and whatdoes it mean?
I will give you a basic overview of theprocedure to do the descaling, but each machine has some smalldifferences, so I will also include the link to the Keurig website sothat you can look up the exact procedure for your machine.
The first thing that you will need todo the descaling is up to 48 ounces of white vinegar. The vinegarwill be run through your machine to dissolve the mineral build up inthe machine that is left behind by the water in the heating process. When the water is heated some of the mineral content in the water isturned into a hard rock like material. This adheres to the sides ofthe tubing and will eventually close off the flow of the waterthrough the tubing. Running the vinegar through the tubing willdissolve the mineral and clean up the tubing in the machine.
Next, place the vinegar into the watercontainer. Make sure that the "Auto Off" feature is turned off.During this cleaning process do not have any K-cups in the machine. Then using a ceramic mug to catch the liquid, press the brew cycleand then discard the liquid that comes out into your sink. Do thisuntil the "add water" comes on. Then let the unit stand for atleast four hours. Do not turn the unit off during this time.
After the four hour plus time period, discard any vinegar left in the water tank and fill the tank withfresh water. Now repeat the process of running the brew cycle intothe mug and discarding the liquid until you get the "add water"message again. By this time you should have all of the residualvinegar purged from the system, but if you still notice any residualtaste then run more water through the unit until it is clear.
This should clean the machine and takeaway the "DE-SCALE" message. If you still have the message afterthe cleaning then you may have to repeat the process again.
Also at this time it is a good ides toclean the pins that pierce the K-cup. To do this take a small paperclip and bend the end of it out so that you have about a 1" prongsticking out. Push the paper clip into the hole of the top and bottompins. This will also clean out any material that maybe stuck insidethe pins. Run another cup of clear water after doing this to push outany debris that you may loosen up by doing this.
