Removing stand arm

Thought I'd share this.Lenovo discontinued the excellent L1940P, which had a stand that allowed pivoting as well as tilting and height adjustment.

So I've bought a L1951P and mounted it onto a stand from Ergotron.

Problem: the Lenovo comes with a hinged arm extending below the bottom of the screen. The Lenovo-supplied stand fits on the end of this arm. How to remove this arm so that it doesn't get in the way of a VESA mounting?

Well, I called Lenovo tech support, and they know nothing beyond what's in the manual that I've read. They claim that this arm is an integral part of the case and can't be removed. Wrong. I really love it when the people I talk to in tech support are actually people who know more about their product than I do...

At the top of the arm is a cylindrical plastic cowling covering the arm hinge. Put the monitor down flat on its front (on a cloth is a good idea to prevent scratches), tilt the arm upwards away from the case, and use a pen-light to look into the gap under the arm. You'll see a little tab on each side, inside, which is part of the cowling and locks the cowling onto the main case.

Use a small flat-head screwdriver to gently push this tab outwards - if you can apply a little pressure away from the case (i.e. upwards, as the case is downwards at this point) as well, you'll see the cylindrical cowling come away from the case on that side. Repeat on the other side. Remove the cowling, and you can access the 3 bolts that hold the arm onto the case. Done!
