Tip & How-To about Ovens
If you have ever experienced your electric oven not shutting off, then you know what it is like to have the oven overheat. It can be a very scary experience. If this happens to you the only thing that will turn it off is unplugging it from the wall outlet or turning off the circuit breaker. Either one of these actions will totally turn off the power to the oven. This will make sure that the oven will no longer heat.
Now, the question is. What happened inside your oven to cause this problem? The problem is with a device called a contactor. This is just a very heavy duty switch that turns the current on and off to the heating element in your oven. Every time this switch opens and closes a small spark or arc happens. Every time this spark happens a small piece of the surface area is melted. After this happens thousands of times the surface of the contactor becomes very rough and the two surfaces do not connect very well. When this happens the surface becomes hot enough to melt a large area of the surface. This melted surface then “welds” together. Now the contacts cannot pull back apart and your oven is on continuously.
The only fix for this problem is to replace the contactor. This is not a hard task and can be done by most handy persons. Just make sure that you have the correct replacement part and that all the power is removed from the stove/range/oven before you attempt to replace it.
If this problem does happen to your oven and you did not realize it for a long time, you should also expect to have other problems after you fix this problem. The excessive heat will cause other problems such as burnt wires, terminals, burnt fuses, and a number of other problems that would be heat related.

Hello Kathy Manson - Unfortunately, based on the symptoms you are describing, the oven liner would need to be replaced. The oven liner cannot be adjusted or shimmed to resolve this issue. If I was in your position, I personally recommend consulting an experiencing service technician to assist with the repairs.
