Tip & How-To about Clothing Accessories

Retrieving Deleted files

Recently, I plugged in my external hard drive to the PVR to create a back up before getting a new PVR. Big mistake! It formatted a portion into Linux and my Windows computer could no longer read it. All my pictures and other files were gone... I thought. I deleted and formatted the Linux partition at the command prompt. I had the software Autopsy which I had used on deleted SD cards and it worked well for that but it couldn't handle my external drive. Finally I downloaded ZAR software which can handle Linux. It took three tries but the last time after leaving it running overnight, I awoke to find that it had recovered almost everything.
Note that you can save the state after finding the files, before transferring them so that you can go back to it if you have problems as I did; twice. Remember to create a space to save the recovered files. The first time, I tried to save to my computer and there wasn't room so the program quit. The second time, the files wouldn't load. Looking at the hex code, it was all zeros. The third time... SUCCESS!
Word of warning... if you think that you can delete your files permanently and no one will ever find them, you are wrong. This software can restore them.

how to hook up to pvr

I imagine that the PVR does not recognize the formatting on the drive as it ships with the GUID partition scheme, and many of the PVRs probably need FAT32. Since the drive you have is 1TB, then you will need to use a Mac to re-format the drive as Windows can only format up to 32GB in FAT32. p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; } To format the drive for cross-platform or PVR use, make sure that you have backed up all your data from the drive as formatting will destroy any data on the drive. First, connect the drive to your Mac, and open Disk Utility. Then select your drive on the left side of the window and choose the Partition Tab. Then change the Current Partition drop-down menu to 1 partition and click on the Options button. A new window will appear where you will choose Master Boot Record (MBR), then click OK. Then choose Free Space from the Format drop-down menu, click Apply, then OK. Your drive will now appear unformatted. Then choose the Erase tab, choose FAT32 as the Format, name your drive (you will be limited to 11 characters), and click Erase, then OK. Your drive will then appear on the desktop formatted for cross-platform use, and you can copy the data you need to move to your PC or PVR and then connect the drive to your PC or PVR. I hope this helps.

My Book essential 2 TB hard drive not recognized by PS3. It is partition with 2 ms-dos fat partitions. An ideas how to get the ps3 to see the usb mass storage device?

You must format the drive as FAT32

Note that your drive is too big to be formatted as a single 2TB FAT32 partition, its basically too big for PS3 usage.

but I think we should be able to get it to work.

You need to create one big partition off the drive, you can do that by connecting the drive first to your computer and then, right click on my computer or computer and select manage. Then on the right side of the computer management window you need to click on Disk management.

On the right side you need to find your 2TB externall hard drive, delete all the partitions from it so that its entirely free space or unpartitioned space, then create a new volume, full size of the drive, do not format it, if it doesn't let you pass without formatting then make sure its on quick format and fat32.
