How to obtain better sound out of vintage stereo equipment

By spending $5.00 and replacing the old paper filter capacitors in vintage stereo amplifiers and receivers the quality of sound can be improved drastically. Anyone with basic soldering equipment and knowledge can do this, remove the cover and look for round capacitors that are about an inch long and replace them with metallized film capacitors, these cost about a quarter each and can be purchased on eBay. You won't believe the difference in the sound after this is done.

HP1020 fax answer phone etc

Digital answer phones record the message on a memory chipset in the same way old tape machines did using a magnetic support. Quality can only be improved by the technology itself, problem is with your specific machine.
If you have a broadband filter try replacing it.
Test the machine on a different phone socket and see if it makes any difference.
Check on your answering machine settings, you should find an option to control volume.

Sibilant output from Pioneer VSX 1018 AH-S

Suspect a DTS board capacitor failures the ESR characteristics.

To troubleshoot connected any available device to RCA stereo connections at input to multi channel in. Test input to the corresponding speaker output confirming audio quality. This circuit bi-passes the DTS function and connects to the power amplifier for the speaker.

Connect any audio amplifier from the preamp out and confirm the quality of the audio.

I suspect that the pre-amp out will contain the distortedf noise. If the distrotion appears in all the channels it is most likely the DTS.

These are repairable.

Hope this helps?
