Tip & How-To about Belkin (F5D7230-4) Router (587009)
Double your range on your WI-FI net work with a Spaghetti-O can and a ink pen!
AND IT'S EASYLY REMOVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not that this project is particularly damaging or dangerous but........
IF YOU DO THIS PROJECT I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY RESOLTING DAMAGES, INJORIES, OR DEATHS. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
OK... here’s what you do. Get a food can that measures 14.5 cm long by
83 mm inside diameter (A large Spaghetti-O can is what I used/use).
Measure from the inside up to 62 mm.
Take a thumbtack or some other sharp round object and make a small hole (from the out side if possible) in the can right at your 62 mm measurement.
Now, from the out side you need to "push" the hole in a little so it makes a slight funnel shape.
(This next part will likely void your warranty)
Next, (UN PLUG IT OF CORSE) you need to remove the plastic/rubber sleeve that’s covering your antenna on your Belkin WI-FI hub. It's the only thing that will come off and go back on with ease.
Now you Need to find an ink pen or marker that will "Replace" the plastic/rubber sleeve I spoke of. The tube has to fit tightly over the smaller notched part of the hinge. (Yes, I did end that sentence with a preposition... bite me)
Once you have your pen tube antenna "replacement" you need to cut it shorter. It needs to cover most of, but not the entire "brass shield thingy".
(There is an alternative way to do this next part)
Now, with the pen tube on the hub, place the wire in the hole of the can and super glue the can to the tube. That holds it in place so you can use a stronger glue or epoxy to finish the job.
Alternative way:
If you can get a small piece of grounding braid/strap.(Look in broken TVs) you can expand it like one of those cheep wicker finger traps then attach it to the can over the hole. Then follow the step above.
The idea here is that the braid/strap acts as a "plug in" or a "Coupler" for the "Brass Shield Thingy" I spoke of earlier. When the braid/strap is pushed on by the BST it expands, making the hole in it bigger. When it gets big enough the BST "falls" in the hole letting the braid/strap close again. This is the better way to do this because the BST HAS to have electrical contact with the can. And the braid/strap also helps the little wire "find" the little hole in the can.
Well there you have it, this will double your WI-FI range in one direction only. To remove it just pull it off when the glue is dry. It may be kind of tricky at first to get the "Cantenna" back on, Try making the hole in the can the just right size, or try taking a pointy thing and messing with the braid/strap if you make it that way. Also, mine is kind of frail. (I used white glue)
