Tip & How-To about Saeco Magic De Luxe Espresso Machine

Fix Saeco Magic De Luxe Not Grinding problem

If you leave the machine for a while, the residual ground beans in the grinder stick and clog the grinder.
- thus "timing out" with the "No beans" light.

After taking apart the grinder and cleaning it out, it still didn't grind. -
Then we ran some ground beans through it a couple of times, and then put fresh whole beans on top of the preground, and it took.

Worked great after that.

Our Saeco Vienna Superautomatica sounds like it's grinding beans but keeps running until the red 'bean' light comes on and we have to shut the machine off. Any suggestions?

The grinder is timing out and stops if the beans do not enter the grinder. This happens because:
1- The grinder outlet is clogged and fresh beans cannot pass through the burrs.
2- The grind setting is too fine and helping clogging in the grinding chamber or the ground coffee outlet.
3- Operator may have been using dark roast oily beans. Like it or not, the dark roast oily beans do not make stronger espresso. Please stop using such beans in fully automatic espresso machines.
4- The grinder has already made over 2000 grinds and the burrs are blunted and not grinding beans as needed.
To solve this malfunction, clean the grinder. Make sure the grinder outlet to the doser is cleaned. This outlet passage is about 2 inches or more. To clean it, lay the machine on its back (water tank side) to allow better view of cleaning the doser and the passage of coffee from the grinder to the doser. Use the link below to find instructions for cleaning the grinder and replace the burrs.

talea ring the grinder will not stop gringing

The Talea model is with a Ceramic grinder system. This can happen when the grinder outlet is clogged with coffee grounds. Fresh beans cannot enter the grinder as the outlet is clogged. Remember, the grinder in any machine is a grinder. It does not shovel the coffee grounds out and clean the outlet when it is clogged.
1- Check if the grind setting is too fine (powder like). If so change the setting to coarse. Fully automatic machines do not need fine grind. Keep the grind fineness like the table slat grain.
2- Check if the beans are dark roast and oily. Oily beans are a slow poison for any fully automatic machine. Change the beans to Non oily medium roast type.

the grinder spins but no beans get grided. sometimes if i push them down it will work for a while.

Remove all beans from grinder and with the remain beans adjust the grinder to more gross grinding and the make 3 to 4 coffees.
Then Use a vacum cleaner and absorve as much from the grinder. Wash also the Beans hopper with soap and hot water so all oil remianing go away. Dry it very well and put back in place.
Now add new add some new beans and try to make an espresso and when the grinder spins then rotate back to the original grinding position. Remeber that you must go back to fine one step at a time not at once since this will blocked the grinder blades with grounded coffe and grinder will not rotate.
You should to this often is you use oily dark roated beans beans. I sugest to find also a better quality beans which are more light color thus less oily.

Grinder settings for Vienna Deluxe

Hi
To start off with, you should not change the big knob unless the grinder is operating at the time.
Set the small knob to the middle position. You can move this any time. Move towards the + mark to strengthen the coffee, but never all the way to the full +.
Set the big knob to the #8 to start off with. Move it 1 # smaller to make the coffee stronger but be careful not to get it to fine as you will clog the grinder and you will have to take it apart to clean. If you ever get an out of beans light, but there are beans in the hopper, open the knob to #16 for 1 cycle, then turn it back down to a # 1 larger than you had before and leave it unless you get the message again. Shiny beans call for a coarser grind than a dull bean because of the oils in the coffee bean. Oils will cause the grinds to stick together and cause clogs faster than beans that have less oil.

Gaggia Trevi or Spidem Trevi

You may have a legitimate mechanical malfunciton but sometimes the simple solution is the right one! The chute on this (and other) superautomatic does not like the oily residue that beans inevitably leave. All it takes it gently putting one or two fingers into the bean hopper as the grinder motor starts to sound louder/faster (this is caused by the grinder motor being under less load/strain because no beans are feeding) and wiggling for 1-2 seconds. If you do this immediately after hearing the grinder motor's rpms increase you will not get a "fill bean hopper" error message2.gif. No hard pushing is required, just a gentle wiggle. There is a shroud over the actual bottom of the hopper, so you don't want to stick your fingers beyond that. If you are concerned about actually sticking your fingers into the hopper while the grinder is running, you can simply push down on the top of the beans with gentle pressure which will in effect force the beans down and accomplish the same thing. This technique + regular cleaning of the grinder may be all you need. Hope this helps! Tony
