Check the connection from the transformer to the track, and that all the track is well connected. Make sure nothing is touching both tracks, shorting them out.

New bright santas christmas express no, 187 train wont smoke

This goes back about 40 years for me. Both Lionel and TYCO had "smokers" in their train sets. My recollection was that the "special smoke oil" was a mixture of very highly refined kerosene and parafin wax. Try a hobby shop such as Hobby Town or some such.

Are transformers for the 387 and 384 interchangable?

Check the output of the transformer going INTO the controler. Mine is 19VAC. IF the controler is working you should measure 25VDC between the inner and outer track with the controller switched on. If you have the AC but not the DC voltage push the red reset button. Once you have the 25VDC put your train in place (engine and coal car) and it should run.

Hi having trouble with

Yes, additional track is available from several places, such as Hobbylinc.com, and TowerHobbies.com. At this time, just after Christmas, they are out of stock, however. Walthers.com has them in stock (1-4-2011). You can find extra track on sale on eBay, as well. Be sure to get the track with the brass covers, as New Bright sells battery powered trains that use bare plastic track, which will not work with the 384. A Google search will turn up more sources.

I have power to the

I'm assuming the train is track powered with a power pack, and not battery powered, so there's actually a few possible solutions. I'll work from the easiest/cheapest, to the more advanced/expensive.

First, especially if the track is old or been in storage a while, the track may have a thin film of dirt, oil, or rust that is insulating the wheels from picking up the power they need from the track. Try cleaning the track with a mild soap but BE SURE TO DRY IT COMPLETELY before reattaching the power. Also, clean the wheels but use a cotton swab and very little water. One drop inside the motor might destroy it from the inside. You can also try a special track cleaning solution sold at your local hobby shop that has HO model train sets. That will work better, especially on lightly rusted parts. Also, make sure all the track connections are tight and free from contaminants.

Then, if you're feeling brave, you can check the motor of the train itself. Disassemble the locomotive and find the motor inside the housing. Check the wires leading from the wheel area to the motor for any corrosion, or loose/broken wires. If it's not the wires which are easy to solder back in place, I wouldn't recommend going any deeper into the motor as it's better and less frustrating to just buy a whole new set.

Finally, the problem may lay in the power pack (inverter) itself. I personally don't bother trying to fix a power pack, but if you know your electronics you could run some tests of the output voltage to the track, and the voltage on the track at various points. Again, it's not worth the time or effort to mess with the power pack unless you know what you're doing. You could get seriously injured or killed by the voltage/amperage running through those things. They even have enough stored electricity after they're unplugged to cause some nasty electrical burns from the capacitors.

Hope this helps and you're able to fix the problem so you can get back to enjoying the train set. I've always enjoyed watching them for hours, especially when I set up my track around the Christmas tree every year! Good luck!

Train light up...makes noises....but won't

This may indicate a short in the train's electrical system. Push the reset button on the controller. If this does not correct the problem, refer to the maintenance section of your instruction manual to clean the tracks and train car contacts. If none of these preventative measures work, you probably have either a defective controller or a short in the train's electrical system. All electrical components of the train set (transformer, track clip, controller and/or tender car) would need to be checked and faulty component has to be replaced. ------- Thanks.Helpmech.

The battery pack is in the coal tender. The top of the tender lifts off pretty simply. It requires six C batteries. You connect the tender to the locomotive via a power cord, which should be obvious. If it's not, perhaps the cord has been severed.

Hello I recently purchased the newbright 384

You should have a transformer with 110 volts ac (household voltage) going in. Coming out should be low voltage dc (direct current) varing from zero to about 15 volts dc. You can measure it with a voltmeter set on dc volts and a 20 volt scale. See if you get voltage out when you turn up the speed of the train - dial. You can test with a 12 volt parking lamp from the auto store or Kmart.
Check for a rest buton on the transformer and also read the transformer and owner manual for the voltage specs. Good luck

Set up this morning.

Check each piece of the train track and make sure it is completely connected and then check each train car and make sure they are firmly on the track. Replace any batteries (inside the coal car or controller, if equipped) with brand new ones. Make sure the tender car is plugged into the locomotive. After you do all of this and you are still having a problem then you will need to replace the power transformer.
