Invacare Pronto M51 Power Wheelchair - Page 9 Questions & Answers
I am an attorney and I am looking for an expert
Your best bet would be to look in the yellow pages under Durable Medical Equpiment to find a local wheelchair/scooter sales & service shop in your area, and ask if they have repaired an Invacare chair before and are familiar with it and can help you.
Another option would be to contact Invacare AS A CUSTOMER and ask to speak with Technical support, see if they have a local field tech who might be able to give you technical repair information over the phone. They probably won't give you the Tech's name and phone, but if you give them yours, the person may call you back and you can give your proposal from there.
I'm with Hoveround, so my knowledge on other brand scooters and power chairs is in general info. I hope this information is helpful to you!
Good luck!
Battery on wheelchair rapidly loses power even
Dave hmm about the only thing it can be is the batteries or one battery that is weaker than the other one. How where they checked? A drop of 1.5 to 2 volts under load is bad enough to cause your problem. Even new batteries can be bad or not maintain the load. OOps thought of another possible cause Now you could have a brush problem with one or both of the motors causing an excessive load on the batteries. I would have your provider check the brushes for you and replace any that look excessively worn. Check the cables on the batteries to make sure that they are tight and not loose. If you have a digital voltmeter you can check your charger voltage output when it is plugged in. Set the meter to 200 volts dc and plug the leads into the two outer holes in the charger port located under the front of the joystick with the charger plugged in the voltage should read 27-30 volts. After charging test the battery voltage at the same place and you should read 25-27 volts. Hope this helps
On/off button not working properly
glenda the switch has a metallic coating under it that makes contact with the circuit board If this coating gets worn then the switch will be hard to turn on -off. Carefully peel back the faceplate cover until you can see the bottom of the on/off switch glue a small piece of foil to the bottom of the switch and support the cover until it dries then carefully stick it back to the joystick Should work like new Hope this helps
My M51 has a scrunching
M51 is a workhorse.
Under normal usage it does not need any service.
Every 3-5 years you will need a new set of GEL CELL 12V battery.
Every month use a razor blade to cut out any hair that may tangle onto the axles /wheels and front wheels.
DO NOT let the battery to go below 3/4 charge at ANYTIME.
====
The clicking sound yo hear is RELAYS noise.
It's completely normal.
The relays are a safety protective device.
In your model,it check the safety locks (between the seat and the motorized base is secure before POWER on the main leads to the motor.
Just think of these two relay as two giant power switches.
The controller check EVERY TIME you move the joystick from the neutral / center position.
It's a safety device and it's a normal.to hear the clicking sound.
I bought a used m51 pronto sure step powerchair.
make sure it really doesn't have a charger ...
How,by taking that seat off, disconnect the joystick cable ,
take off the seat ,remove the black should which does or will cover the U1 Gellcell battery's you will have to buy. In the back of that chair there will be a box that has two cords one that pugs to the power cord( you'll also be needing to buy ,you can from radio shack if you don't have one that is)but the other wire connects to the model "'brain'' of the chair that's in the front of the chair. If its not there you'll need a on board charger, pluse two battery's and that power cable that plugs into the back of your chair ,It looks like and is the same as the power cable in the back of you computer.
Good luck hope I was of some help.

Hi..I did like you said and it worked for two
This is a common problem with the M91 when the motors are more than several years old.
An error code of 4 flashes indicates a right motor fault. The right motor could have a short or open circuit, or a bad connection.
Check the right motor, connections and motor cable visually and with a voltmeter at the connector. Look for cuts, nicks and breaks in the wiring and for grease oozing out of the gearbox. Flip the seat back and remove the top cover. Disconnect the black square right motor plug and check the resistance across the red and black motor wires using a digital volt meter. 0 to 1.6 ohms is OK, anything out of this range is suspect.
If the motors are more than 3 years old, you should consider replacing the motor/brake/gearboxes as a pair, left and right. The motor/brake is about $650 with the motor/ brake/ gearbox assembly about $1,000 per side. Labor is 2 to 3 hours total. I usually replace the brake/motor/gearbox as a complete assembly to avoid future problems. Hope this helps.

Power chairs are not designed to operate while they are plugged into the charger, as it will drag the charger around or you may run over the cord, therefore most power chairs have an inhibit feature that prevents the power chair from moving while it is connected to the charger.
If you saw sparks from the joystick, something has shorted out the controller; moisture or condensation may have gotten into the controller or there may have been a manufacturing defect.
I do not think there is anything you can do at this point except to contact the manufacturer or the place where you purchased the power chair to arrange a service call and replacement of the joystick/controller. If your insurance bought the power chair for you they may cover the repair if it is not covered by the warranty.
Good luck!
I have a brand new
Either way I usually have people charge with power off but you can do it either way
I have oil leaking onto the left side tire of my
Sounds like you have a blown seal on your left gearbox. The only permanent solution is to replace the left brake/motor gearbox assembly. Not exactly a do-it-yourself repair. to verify, you can pull the seat off to inspect with a flashlight or tip the chair up at 45 degrees on the right drive wheel to inspect.
In my experience this is a common problem. It may take some time for enough gearbox grease to ooze out and cause the gearbox to fail. If you run the chair inside the house it will get messy very quickly and the grease stains are difficult to remove. If the chair is upwards of 4 or 5 years consider replacing left and right motor/gearbox assemblies. Hope this helps.
Wheelchair lights are blinking and
You can visit this website to find answers on what the flashing trouble indicator lights mean:
http://www.pgdt.com/scenter/diagnostics/diagvsi.html
Locate the page that has the controller used on your power chair/scooter and count how many lights are flashing to diagnose the trouble. Try to reset your system by turning off the power chair, moving the manual brakes from drive to push and then back to drive and turn the power chair back on to see if that clears the problem. If your insurance purchased the power chair for you, they may also cover the repairs; contact them for information.
Good luck!
I have invacare pronto m51 with surestep the spjis
The 9 flash error code indicates a communications fault. The communication fault relates to the communication between the joystick and the control module. The joystick on the arm mount is connected to the control module in the base. When there is a break in the wiring of this wiring harness, also called a bus cable, a fault occurs. This trips the computer and the computer sends out a flash code to the joystick. Simply stated there is a broken or pinched wire between the joystick and controller. Look physically at the wire and check for cuts, breaks or pinches. The best short term repair is to repair the broken wire with solder and heat shrink or tape. You can also use **** splice connectors and tape. The best long term repair is to replace the harness with a part available from Invacare. The most definitive way to diagnose this problem is to read the fault log of the controller using a hand held programmer available to dealers and certified technicians. The number and type of fault codes logged in the controller is another indicator of which
component(s) has failed. Hope this helps.
The chair will turn on with the push button but
rblome You have a bad switch on the joystick. Now its not really the switch but the switch button. Under the button there was a metallic coating that makes contact with the cicuit board switch turning the chair on and off. If that coating gets worn then the switch doesn't wanna act right. Now if you feel creative and don't want to order a new faceplate then you can carefully peel the faceplate off the joystick (just far enough to expose the bottom of the on/off switch, put a small block under the faceplate to keep the bottom exposed) and taking a small piece of foil glue it to the bottom of the on/off switch. after it dries trim the foil to fit the size of the switch bottom and disconnect the joystick cable at the rear of the chair and carefully reinstall the faceplate making sure that you get the switch into its hole in the joystick. You might have to put a small dab of glue to the top of the faceplate that rests on the case to keep it down and in place. (Now I didn't tell you how to do this its our secret) plug the cable back in and try the switch it should work fine but it will be sensitive to turning on/off. Hope this helps
I can not get the speed that i use to
Hi please rate my answer as in thumbs up 1 to 4.Download as a PDF File:troubleshooting_2007 SHOPRIDER.pdf, save to your adobe Reader + print n save in a polythene sleeve for future as i done,im disabled myself.i do this as i care for others & was once stranded for 3 months without my wheels,so i know how much these things mean to someone.have a nice day Colin.
Plugged the chair into 220v electricity supply. i
WOW!! Big OOPS huh? You probably blew the charger with that jolt. Does your joystick come on at all? Since the charger is connected to the controller or Power Module I hope you didn't blow that up. If you have a digital voltmeter you can set it to 200 volts dc and plug the leads into the 2 outter holes of the charger port located under the front of the joystick. You should read the battery voltage ot 24 - 30 volts. If you don't get anything at the joystick then you will have to remove the seat to get access to the batteries and check the fuses located on the positive posts of each battery. If those are not blown and you still don't have power to the joystick then I'm afraid you blew the controller cause there's no fuse for it. Sorry but if Medicare paid for your chair then you can call a repair service like Roadrunner Mobility @ 1-800-467-2668 or Repair Xpress @ 1-877-581-3733 to have them fix it for you. I might not mention that you plugged into 220 volts tho. Hope this helps
