I lost the product key for a game that i had one time and when i went to try and get a new product key the company that made the game said that i would have to pay something like $10 for a new key.

You can't, a dedicated server is a computer that handles the information for all players, thus making it more efficient than a host server. If you want to host and play the game just go in the server list and click, start new game.

If you bought a game through an online game service, they may have emailed you a key, or it is under the account settings on their web page. They probably have a 'where is my code' section on the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) on their page you can read. If you bought it in a store, it might be on the back of the manual if one came with it, or on the CD/DVD case.
