Blown chip on 160GB Maxtor SATA hard drive
unfortunally the chips on these circuit boards contain a lot of unique data specific to this disk, such as the mapping data, this specific run of hdd software, translator for data coming in to how it is actually written on the disk. and final fine tuning the disk uses to locate its track, meaning they are not universal , but usually only fit the specific production run. so in short, it may be possible to lure the data out, but it is a highly specialized task generally not possible to do yourself. data recovery work is very time consuming and highly skilled work, therefor very expensive.this is why its always best to back up critical data on several disks, and ideally on offsite storage server

Drive very noisey when starts
are you sure its the drive and not the PSU power supply unit
if your hear it groan struggling to boot up it will be the PSU
you could run the check disk utility
click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to repair any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive then defragment your hard drive or
go to control panel administrive tools computer management you can right click on the drive select properties tools check now?tick in both boxes to scan for and attempt to repair/recover any bad sectors and automaticall fix any corrupt files
hope this helps

Change a hard drive
As a general rule, SATA drive like the DiamondMax Plus 9 160 GB Hard Drive can be made either master or slave by just plugging the drive cable to the appropriate alternative SATA port on the motherboard without changing anything on the drive. MAKE SURE YOU UNPLUG THE PC FROM THE MAIN POWER FIRST!
Most motherboard will have two such ports on the motherboard in close proximity to each other (just follow the 'flat' usually red or yellow cable from the SATA drive towards the motherboard to locate the ports).
Hope it helps.

I need to free up space on my Maxtor One Touch
Sounds like the default settings is trying to back up your entire drive. If this is what you are wanting to do you will need an external drive. If you are just wanting to back up your documents and the system registry you should change the options. That is what I back up and suggest

Hard disk reflecting incorrect storage space
Think this is down to your BIOS, or possibly your operating system, not being new enough to recognise hard drives that big. At every stage of the development of computers, there has been some theoretical limit on how much hard drive space the system can address - and this limit has invariably been set with a total lack of insight into how quickly drive sizes were going to grow.
Have a serious look at the paperwork that came with the drive (also downloadable from the Maxtor website) - and follow the instructions to get access to all the drive. This may involve either a patch to the OS, or setting things up using a piece of software they provide called Maxblast.
Go at it carefully - make sure you don't accidentally delete everything you've got on the other 111 GB - and make sure you have a decent backup before you start.

Changing disks for my hard drive
We have a terminology problem here.
I assume you mean that you couldn't repair the computer, so you took out the HDs and put them into another computer.
The new computer has different hardware, and maybe a different OS, so your solution can't work.
If you're going from XP to XP, you may be able to use a repair install, but chances are you need to reinstall the OS.
Please speciify the OS on both machines and I may be able to offer more suggestions.
