Sounds like bulb is burnt out. Have replaced its the cheapest way to go. It may be a power board but if its out of its warrenty, then you may just want to buy a new set.

You probably need this. Check to see if your lamp is bad by finding the location in the TV and inspecting it. After you replace this and it doesn't work it's probably this...

Bad ballast.

You have a bad color wheel. They're 100 dollars and take some skill to replace.

Check the projector lamp. It's life may be over or burnt.

It could be a simple lamp sensor ( check the door switch which i recommend since it is a known issue)
It is a thermal interupt it is called a thermal CBA.

Hi,
Based on your description the caused of this symptoms was the faulty electrolytic capacitor in the power supply board. Leaky/dried filter electrolytic capacitor will dropped the supply voltage and will disable the unit. At the first stage of the symptoms, warm up will make itself stable but it will get worst, times will come that the unit will not even power up.
Leaky electrolytic capacitor has a physical indication of fault like bulged/dome at the top and can be easily identify. See sample picture below.


Dried capacitor has no physical indication of fault, you must have a capacitor checker to determine its condition. If not available you must replaced all of them in the power supply board with same capacitance and voltage rating which is printed in its body itself.
Another option is, you may replaced the entire power supply board, click this link for replacement.
If you don't have necessary tools and test instrument and can't troubleshoot the unit yourself, I would advice you to look for a qualified tv technician to isolate the faulty capacitor.

According to specifications from Philips, your Philips Magnavox 50ML8105 is a 50"DLP projection TV only, and not a TV DVD combo. You are using an external DVD player with it, I thinks. Is it correct? If so, what is the brand name and model number of DVD you connected with this TV? Please provide these details to me by Fixya. OK

the captions could be coming from another source such as a satellite orcable box or maybe a dvd/blu ray player etc.

The set's model number is on a label on the rear of the set.

As far as a replacement remote do not bother with a universal as most of them do not work or have all the functions on a Philips product (Philips is Magnavox).

With a good model number either call Philips or someone like ANDREWS ELECTRONICS (They are in California but take orders and ship all over--with the model number they will come up with a part number for you and know if the remote is available or not.)

It sounds like you have a bad color wheel. If you are handy with electronics, it is a pretty simple fix. If not, I would suggest you take your set to a qualified service center.
