Your system is somehow corrupted, could be music downloaded from the net, whatever it is easy fixable.

A) Download the firmware from Archos and save it to your desktop (Make sure the file name on the desktop hasn't changed from the original download file name)

B) The Archos 5 or 7:
1- Plug the unit to you computer via the USB cable.
2- The unit should start automatically and open the following page:
3- From the recovery console (the screen that asks for repair or format etc…)
4- Select "Repair" by scrolling up and down with the volume control on the right of the unit (Do not press "Format" at any time)
5- Now that you are on "Repair" press the on and off button, shortly to validate your selection
6- The unit will go to "Plug the unit etc…" but it is already plugged from point 1 - DO NOT press anything anymore on the Archos
8- Wait until Pc should recognizes your Archos (around 5 seconds)

C) Computer
1- From your computer select the firmware file you downloaded from the net and put it in your Archos (in the root folder, nowhere else, where it has the folders, music, videos, pictures etc… as a file)

D) On the Archos 5 or 7
1- Select "Ok" on the Archos (on & off button) shortly to select and confirm the file is now on the Archos
2- you are done! The Archos 5 or 7 should now read through the file you have transferred and repair the system
3- DO NOT DISCONNECT the USB cable until the process is finished
4- when done safely disconnect (as you usually do, for Mac trash the letter of the Archos to the bin or for PC's: right click the green icon bottom right of the screen for xp & vista)
5- Press on/off button to reboot

Your unit should restart with a fresh repaired, updated system like day one.

when i got my new archos the default code was 0000. try that.

I recommend trying your archos on a different computer just to see if it is a pc or archos problem. Your pc should come right up and ask if you want to charge or use the usb port or both. Try another computer.

Your archos probably has a glitch in it. You might have to do a system recovery of it. First download the latest firmware program from Archos website. Here is a quick possible fix when the screen comes up reset the archos by inserting a paperclip in the reset hole located at the bottom of the unit right of the connectors it might work it might not. if that doesn't fix the problem do a hard reset when the logo screen comes up hold down the volume+ button until the white recovery page comes up. First try repairing the unit if that doesn't work try format and follow the instructions. the touch screen doesn't function during the recovery page so use the volume+&- buttons & power button. When you get done your archos should be set to factory presets so you have to set it up. Good Luck

Before you hook up to usb go into tools/settings/storage & see if your archos is set for pc hard drive mode which turns the unit into a external hard drive. That should fix it,Make sure you have a copy of the latest firmware downloaded onto your desktop from the Archos website before you try formatting or recovery functions. if that doesn't you might have to do a repair or format. You can try these functions in Customer assistance function in the tools/settings/customer assistance, but I have much better luck doing a hard reset. Sometimes the unit gets a glitch in it & you have to do a hard reset.
Turn on the power when the Archos screen comes on which has the Archos logo on it Immediately hold down the volume + button until the recovery page comes up

I recommend using a good wireless router, when you buy the A5 it comes with the web & email functions. The email capabilities are questionable though I have hotmail & it locks up a lot. The web functions work well, just make sure you have a good wireless router setup.

i have the same problem. as far as i know it is because large external hard drives require more power and the archos does not provide enough power. it would probably work if u got a hd which had a separate power source.

Make sure the usb cable is not damaged you can try to connect to pc by docking the device to DVR station or mini charging dock too there is 2 type of connections available for charging stations. By using another type of Usb cables. Mini usb 5 pins to usb.Same cable used for sony PSP also.

I have found a solution for this issue, if you hold down the volume button and the power button for several seconds the Archos goes into a restore type mode. You then plug it into your computer and download the latest firmware update and cut and paste it onto the archos removable hard drive icon that appears in my computer. It will take a few minutes to update but then it will work perfectly.

did you buy it new. then there should be a warranty on it and you could send it back and it could get reapaired

Ijust bought a archos 5 250gb , conected via usb and drag some music from pc to archos . A few hours late the archos stopped, the pc don´t recognize the archos .
I pressed the on/off and vol together and formated the aarchos .
now had been disaster , the display just appeared the ARCOS Entertainement you way . the pc don´t regognizer the ARCHOS, NOTHING APPEARED .

put the videos in the flash folder

try to reset the system. it might mean u will have to lose files, but u can back up first....

that happened to me once. i deleted the email account and set up a new one. try that.

It's worth a shot, is there a pan control somewhere in the settings? These settings act as a cross fade between the right and left stereo signal. If its on all the way left or all the way right, you won't get sound out of one phone. Also have you tried to use a different pair of phones? The only other thing it could be is if there are internal volume/gain controls. My iPod has these. It limits the max volume I can get out of it. It may have been turned on some how. If it's not any of those, then i'm afraid you have a faulty headphone jack. It may be need to be sent in for warranty, or repair. If this is the case, you could in the mean time fanagle it a bit... Sometimes if you pull a phone out of the jack just a touch it creates a short in the jack which sends the single thru as mono. Hope that helps.

Click Tools -> Settings -> Firmware and Plug-Ins and click stop demo Firmware (Mine is not activated and this may not be there).
