Did you have spark before repairs? Maybe the coil got bumped or ground wire to coil is pinched and grounding out. Check coil gap to flywheel, a standard gap is .005". kohler engine air cool they will over heat if fuel system lean carburetor clogged out of adjustment causing lean fuel mixture,air cool engine need plenty air to keep cool, make sure air filter clean and make sure cooling fins not clogged with debris make sure shrouds and blower housing are tight so air can circulate. air cooling engines kinda remind you of 1963 corvairs

mine has hydrodrolic lifters no adjustmetn

dissemble the unit and pay attention to the valves, the valve train, cylinder walls and piston rings, depending on age and hours operated,one or all of these can cause issues, also pay close attention to the condition of the cylinder head gasket.

Hmm, maybe one of the circuits busted. I would call a specialized person for this.

if you had sent power to the coils by your self you could have burned out the diodes inbetween coils

I have a Ford LGT with a 14 hp Kohler K321AS engine. Go to Kohler.com and download the service manual for the K321 engine. The manual covers all of the K type engines and gives diagrams and details of all the different types of ignition and electrical systems. It is free. JS

Over time carbon deposits build inside the engine including the valves, seats and spark plug. Easy to change plugs however not so easy to clean carbon. There are products at auto parts store that you can pour into carb and add to fuel that can help to eliminate deposits. Leaking valves can cause poping noise, backfire etc. Easy fix is to try using products mentiond above then new plugs and add several gallons of premium fuel to increase the octane level. If the engine does not run however suspect old fuel or water in fuel bowel. Try spraying carb cleaner into carb little at a time to keep running. If the engine runs with carb cleaner, suspect fuel/carb/pump problem. Good luck

Generic trouble shooting from the service manual:

Engine Will Not Idle

1. Dirt or water in the fuel system.

2. Stale fuel and/or gum in carburetor.

3. Faulty spark plugs.

4. Fuel supply inadequate.

5. Idle speed adjusting screw improperly set.

6. Idle fuel adjusting needle improperly set (some

models).

7. Low compression.

8. Restricted fuel tank cap vent.

9. Engine overheated-cooling system/air circulation
problem.

See page 38 just read....

Then see page 43 about the governed idle spring and tab.
Lastly... it all of the above are good suspect clogged carb passages for IDLE speed control to include the idle mixture jet on page 42, figures 5.4 and 5-5.

Make sure the carb is tight and no intake gasket leaks also.
Carb service and repair procedures go all the way to page 60.

Hi,The valve guides are bad and oil is running down into the cylinder when the engine is off...when you start it the oil burns off making the blue smoke...the only way to fix it is to rebuild the motor...heatman101

were the valves set or gapped correctly? Is there spark coming from the coil wire too? Check out these two before trying anything else

You have a bad Ignition Coil (Module). This is how they act when they start going out. Eventually you won't even be able to get it running.

hi there have you checked the timming keys in the flywheel and made sure the mixture is not lean

make sure the ignition units are not breaking down under load

if the unit has a SAM ( spark Advance Module ) check it as well

Most likely it is some sort of gunk in the carburetor. if it has been stored with gas in it this can cause this problem. You can try a strong dose of carburetor cleaner in with the gas. (Use fresh gas in the tank). and see if that helps. give it some time, but It may need a new carb or a rebuild.
