That sounds VERY much like a faulty automatic choke.

That engine shouldn't have any rectifier.

Probably a stuck needle and seat valve. It could also be dirt or varnish in the carb. If so then you will need to take the carb apart and spray it with carb cleaner then wipe it off. I'l bet thet you probably stored it with gas in the tank without any gas stabilier. Good luck, Marty

most of the timing on this type of engine requires the alignment of the dots on the cam shafts with the dots on the crankshaft. Only other timing required would be the coil leg gap to the flywheel magnets. Most of these require approx 12 thousand clearance.

Here are several things to check: Make sure the battery is fully charged at 12.5 volts Check all battery and wiring connections. If anything is loose or dirty, clean and tighten. If everything is good there, the problem is either in the key switch or the starter relay. Try jumpering the relay input from the key switch. if that works consistently, then the problem is in the key switch. if not, then probably in the relay.

Why is the engine overheating? Air cooled engines will overheat when running too lean a fuel mixture. Is the spark plug colour indicating too lean a fuel mixture?

I wouldn't use it. Google "non-ethenal fuel" with your zip code and you can find a local station that sells non-ethenal fuel.

Your fuel mixture is way too rich, check carb and choke, also check airfilter and housing

It sounds like you made a bad valve adjustment and it has thrown a rod, and binding on one cylinder, hence partial turnover, cylinder on compression. Pull apart again and re-check.

You said in the above this is a gasoline engine? Kohler there are no injectors???

Check oil type and viscosity, check oil filter for correct OEM type and make sure it is new. Then re-check, then check the oil pump.

I don't have any idea what Carl just said, but remove the little ground wire from the coil and try to start the engine. If it fires and runs ok, you have a grounding issue somewhere and need to follow the wires around to see if anything that shouldn't be touching metal, is.

Check that the keyway for the flywheel to the crankshaft hasn't sheared. This is a common problem that throws timing very far off causing backfire and no-starts.

You have an intake manifold or carb assy loose sucking secondary air, too lean a fuel mixture, or timing issue

Backfire is normal if the fuel mixture is too lean, check the color of the plugs, they should be biscuit brown / tan. If they are grey, it is too lean and can cause valve over heating. Also the timing maybe off

If the fuel is set too high and the choke is on it is easy to flood it. The solution is to open the choke and keep the throttle low for a few turns to air dry the spark plugs then back to choke to start it again

Check plug and clean and re gap also a clean filter will help some times mixture to rich dirty filter ,The other thing u could o if filter and plug is ok adjust idle speed up till it runs smooth ,1 last thing adjust air screw turn both ways till it runs smooth

Sounds like tick over speed is running to slow adjust till it runs smoothly,also u might like to adjust the air screw just a possibility also make a note how many turns u do just in case u go to far then u can put back as was
