Hi Jerry: My Craftsman ride on Mower does not have "gears" as such. There are separate forward and reverse pedals. Can you give us a model number for your machine?

There are Craftman model numbers and there are Briggs and Stratton model numbers. Here are ALL the Briggs and Stratton model numbers. What is the valve clearance on a 21 HP Briggs and Stratton If it turns out that the engine is a 33M677/0149-B1, the required valve clearances are 0.003-0.005" for both intake and exhaust, but this is different for each different engine size, so let's make sure we are talking about the right engine. Remove both spark plugs and test each cylinder for compression. Just press your thumb over the spark plug hole and crank engine. A good cylinder will forcibly push your thumb away with a pfft sound. Likely you'll find one cylinder has no compression.

If you have a dead cylinder, remove the rocker arm cover and assess the damage. If you're lucky you'll find a push rod out of place with no other damage.

Check operation of the seat switch.

The safety circuitry requires operator in seat while brake OFF or PTO ON, else engine kill.

You did not install the belt correctly, try again!

Wire diagram shows ignition switch in ON position, PTO switch ON, and either control arm not in reverse for PTO clutch energized. PTO clutch uses frame ground for circuit return.

Check switch functions and clutch cable ground.

Check fuel valve is fully open. Check that fuel flows freely from to the carburetor input fitting... just remove line at carb and it should be a full steady stream of fuel.

Check that the primer bulb functions.

Be sure the O ring between backside of carburetor and engine intake is in good condition and in place.

Check breather tube from crankcase to air filter base is not cracked or damaged. Check the gasket between carburetor and air filter base is in place and properly oriented.

Remove the starter and check the small pawl on the starter cup, it is either worn or is stuck open

That meter is made for Sears by Extech. You may need to contact them to see if they have one

How tall is the grass you're mowing?

Possibly it needs cleaned. Remove deck and clean out any build up if grass/dirt.

If the blades have been sharpened multiple times, replace. When the lateral length gets too short the blades no longer create enough lift to expel the clippings.
