Hi Joe
Still having trouble with that old mower! I thought you fixed it? You stated
the reason it was turning over and lock up the mower had the wrong starter on it the Starter Motor Drive Bendix had 16 teeth and the mower needed a Starter with 14 teeth so I changed the Starter out. That's what I did.
I reckon you are using batteries that are wearing out and don't have the required amps. Jump start the mower using your Santa Fe with the engine running. Or take the batteries to an Interstate Battery shop and ask them to test them. That is free, but they can also pulse charge them to desulphate the plates. There is a small charge for that and they keep the battery for 24 hours.
Other things you can try.
Remove the starter and connect it direct to the battery. See if it spins freely?
Turn the engine over by hand to see if there is stiffness. Then do it with the plugs out.

Hello Joe
How old is the battery? Battery life in mowers is bad because they usually aren't well looked after in the winter, 6 months use and 6 months neglect.
Also fuel is often left in the tank and in the carb which goes funky.
Do you have a compression tester?

Turn Off the Ignition: Move the ignition switch on the Craftsman trimmer into the "Off" position.
Remove the Starter Assembly Cover: Use a screwdriver to unscrew the starter assembly cover and remove it from the trimmer.
Prepare the New Pull Cord: Cut off the old cord from both the pulley and the starter handle. Dispose of the old cord.
Replace the Pull Cord: Flip the starter cover over and replace the pull cord. Make sure it's securely attached to the pulley.
Reassemble the Starter Assembly: Put the starter assembly cover back in place and secure it with the screws. How to Replace the Pull Cord on a Craftsman Weed Trimmer (youtube.com)

Clean the battery posts and the connectors with a wire brush and then smear them with Vaseline. Tighten the connectors well. Take of the negative ground to the chassis and do the same with that.
Also take the battery to an Interstate Battery outlet and ask them to load test the battery. Voltage is one thing but Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) is the important part of a battery. They do it for free and it takes 2 minutes, and you get a printout, CCA on the battery to CCA Actual.

It would be a good idea to start by replacing the belts.

The model # should be on a sticker under the seat.
You can take the belts off and the shop can measure them too.
Best to you.
As you mentioned, Craftsman chainsaws are often manufactured by Poulan, and they may share similar specifications with corresponding Poulan models. However, without specific documentation or further details, it's challenging to provide an exact RPM value for this particular model.
To obtain accurate and reliable information about the nominal maximum RPM for the Craftsman chainsaw, I recommend referring to the owner's manual or contacting the manufacturer directly. They will be able to provide you with the precise specifications for this specific model.
Likely the unit is detecting a reverse direction. Could be the reverse switch, adjustment, or debris. Try using the ROS position on the ignition switch. If the problem goes away then it is definitely reverse operation related and further diagnosis of reverse detection required.
I have the same rear engine tractor and cannot find parts anywhere. I did find another model that seems to look exactly the same. The model is 536.270212. It walked me through removing the deck, blade and motion belt. You can find the manual at www.hammerwall.com.. Hope this helps.
Caveats when using starter fluid. The carburetor must not flood the cylinder with fuel. A flooded engine will not fire, even on starter fluid. If you're not sure, pinch off the fuel line and drain the carburetor bowl. Remove the spark plug and pull recoil several times to dry out the cylinder.Remove air filter, set choke full open, spray a short burst of fluid directly into the carb throat. Promptly pull starter.Use a new dry spark plug. If it does not fire, try gapping plug 0.005" shorter and repeat above procedure.Comment for further assistance.
