A BLAST FROM THE PAST what is the problem with it, black screen? or ugly screens, what? (no starts, have many other symptom or lack of that MATTER) why not ask HP this. its 2017 now, see the calendar? its old, and all OLD PCs are going to be dead or need hard work and lots of cash to fix. (like and old car same thing ,same reasons) or learn to GOODLE , Nvidia Class Action" be wise , no? is bet its not for you pc, of the 1000s made, whats the chances. so you thing a 7 year old suit is still ticking along? why? here learn something about blame. first find the REAL problem with your PC, what is bad.? the lay blame to that real fact. not guess or dream. . seems this PC is 2007, as old as... if your PC is 2008, may PC not just HP had a GPU solderball failure. US gov. caused. first is the correct power pack volts and amps and watts first first first. my guess is 65watt min..(i dont know Compaq volts its too old) then the Fan must come on or the POWER regs are shot. a common ***** of mobo cause why are you fiddling around old junk parts, there is no support for this zero value PC? its only worth $5 used and broken. your diagnosis false.,sorry. totally in electronics if the voltage falls in the 2 lines from the pack. lets say its a real HP with 19v as most are, (compaq?) if you plug it in and the volts falls (use a thing called a volt meter and ignore useless LED that glow at 2v, see why?) then if 19v is say 10vdc NOW, (hard fail that) that is what? answer is 2 things. 1;bad pack (wrong pack ,weak pack or dead) 2;or the load is shorted, facts. this is called electronics trouble shooting 101. and OHMS laws are day 1 learning topics. did you strip the mobo clean first. ? there are 2 ways to do this start full and strip or start empty and build. see this, see the parts pulled? its a complex Elitebook, one of the best made ever. not compaq relics. http://pcdied.com/black-screen.html#BIOS we remove all modules 1 by 1, and CPU GPU last. keep an open mind, use a voltmeter, the BIOS is dead if cpu is pulled sure. but will still hold power. the sad thing is seeing folks use LED for a voltmeter. sorry that is hopeless. (2volts is useless info(@^@) a Voltmeter DMM is $20 at walmart. buy one and learn to use it. the PC mobo has regulator on board, mine converts 19vdc raw to like 5 other key power rails I have a schematic of my mobo, (rare but have it) i can probe the rails to see if the regulator is shutting down they do that on all overloads, all do. (this feature prevents burned up regs. a good thing) If lucky, one h part removed from the MOBO cures the overload. we have load bank in our shop we can load down any power pack made or PSU and see if it can just full power. many cant. do to old parts you are buying or using wrong parts, with no parts list ?how can you fix any pc, the parts list tells you the true packs spec, volts,amps/watts. never assume what it came with it was right , or get FAIL endless. BTW HP still makes learning correct packs sizes hard. mine has 4 packs listed, for each faster power hogging CPU and GPU but does not match them up in the service guide. just shows them. so this can get hard. In my case only the 100w works, mine max max speed.

Remove main battery and try again, if no! sub out the ram one at a time, and test, if no change! the DC jack in the laptop has broken free from the motherboard, if that is the case! you will need a professional to take this further.

You may still have a virus,worm,trojan,etc on your computer.
To remove a virus,trojan,worm,etc from your computer...do it the EASY way...let someone else do it for you.
Start your computer, as the computer is starting keep tapping the F8 Key.
This will start the computer in the Safe Mode.
Once in the safe mode go to the following webage below and download,install, and run Microsoft Safety Scanner for FREE.
Once you run the Microsoft Safety Scanner (it may take quite a while depending on the size of your hard drive) it will remove all the virus's,trojans,worms,etc it finds, if it does not completely remove them all you will be given a chance to chat with a Microsoft Professional thru a pop open window and he will take control of your computer (with your permission) and finish removing all the rest of the virus's, trojans, or worms that are on your computer for FREE!! Can't beat FREE!!

i also have a compaq presario f572us that's been having similar problems. when i went onto the hp website i saw that apparently they've been having similar problems with this type of computer as they offer free repairs for 2 years after you bought it. you should probably check if this works for you too

If your computer occasionally shuts off it may be due to overheating. As a safety precaution your computer will shutdown upon reaching a certain temperature. If you are using your laptop in bed, and it is resting on a blanket or some other object is blocking the fan it may cause the laptop to overheat. Try elevating the laptop or getting a laptop mat with built in fan to help keep it cool. If there is an issue with the Nvida card changing the BIOS will not help.

This could be the smell of dust getting hot and smelling. I would shut this down and clean it out also get a cooling underneath cooling fan for it as well. This is what dust can do over time it does smell like a short so have this looked at and do not keep using it until the machine is cleaned the cooling fan is checked out as well as the undercarriage cooling fan would be most helpful as well. You will see a tiny hole just next to the CD drawer i normally straighten out a paper clip. Just poke it in the hole and it should release and hopefully work fine after that. Cheers from Scott and plz vote

Here's what you can try.
1. Remove the battery and try turning the laptop just from AC adapter. Maybe the battery is bad and shorting the system.
2. Try turning it on just on battery power (with AC adapter removed). Maybe the AC adapter is bad and shorting the system.
3. Try removing memory modules one by one. Maybe your failure somehow related to memory. Test the laptop with only one memory module installed. Try either one.
If nothing helps, the laptop still turns on and off by itself, most likely this is motherboard related failure.

two solutions:
1- use a cooling hardware. maybe your laptop hangs because of high Temprature.
2- VGA of your laptop almost destroyed !!(sorry damaged).
so you can only take your laptop to a guarantee center.

Try these steps in order

1) UNPLUG THE LAPTOP
2) REMOVE THE BATTERY
3) HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS TO 2 MINUTES
4) THEN PUT THE BATTERY BACK IN
5) START IT UP.

After you get it started you will most Likely have to reinstalled windows.

Hi,try checking the Memory by swapping them,if you still have issues take to an expert,but be prepared you might have to change your board.

its a defective graphics card...there is a class action lawsuit for this model and many others. search nvidia class action lawsuit. you can get it repaired or replaced with the settlement terms. I have same laptop, same problem!

Once you enter the setup and it loads the entire program, then you need to press the R key, which is for repairing the windows installation. This action will take you to the dos mode where further processing will be done. In the dos mode, system will ask you about installation place. Most of the people install their operating system in the C drive, which comes at number 1 option, so you need to press option 1. However, if you have so many partitions or you have installed the operating system then you need to choose the option according to your drive name. Here you need to enter your password as well, but if you have not set any password then you can simply press enter.
*Then there will be a c:\WINDOWS> command in a dos mode where you need to write, "Copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\windows. However, if you have different place of your installed operating system then you will write the address of that drive. This is the whole process and now you can eject the cd and can press exit to restart the system. Now this process will copy the correct NTLDR file from installation disk to your hard drive by making your system in the working condition.
Remember to fix your Windows registry with RegInOut Registry Cleaner and PC Optimizer

1. Take the battery out of the laptop & try to turn on the laptop using power adapter only. If the computer turns on, then the battery is defective & needs to be replaced.
2. Make sure the power adapter is not defective. Test the output voltage of the power adapter using a voltmeter. Compare the voltmeter reading to the nominal value written on the adapter or the laptop.
3. Make sure the DC jack is not loose or broken. A loose DC jack will need to be re-soldered. A broken one will need to be replaced.
4. If you have another processor which is compatible with your laptop's model, try swapping processors & test to see if the laptop will work.
5. The power button could be bad.
6. The motherboard could be defective & needs to be replaced

I have been having the same problem. At first I thought that the motherboard was fried and the laptop was a paper weight, but I kept it plugged in and kept pressing the power button several times over the days. It would always seem to start (screen remained off/black) and then it would just go off again in seconds. But persevarence has paid off, finally almost after a week it started up like normal and started working again as normal. I then had the same episode repeat a few weeks later, the computer was useless for a few days and again started up as I kept pressing the power button several times a day.

I believe the problem is with the standby mode. Each time the problem happened, it seems like the computer was going into standby mode and the power button was pressed again before it could competely go into standby or the button was pressed again while it was coming out of standby.

To sum it up, nothing is wrong with the cimputer components, there is some problem with the standby routine. Keep pressing the power button and hopefully you can get lucky in getting the computer to start again. Long term, I am thinking about checking whether there was a new flash update that came out that could fix this problem. I purchased the laptop compaq F72US in 2008 and never updated anything. Also worth noting that I called HP and they didn't stand behind their product.
