Pentair sand dollar filter is leaking water when

If you have the valve in the Filter position and it is still leaking water out the backwash line, the problem is the Spider gasket inside the valve itself. However, the valve that usually comes with the Sand Dollar filters has the gasket glued to the Diverter, and has to be replaced as one piece, sorry about that!

If you have a manual on the filter, go to the parts page dealing with the valve. If you do not have a manual, the link below will take you to one online:

http://www.pentairpool.com/pdfs/SandDollarOM.pdf

The part that needs replaced in Item #8. What you will do when you get the replacement part is to stop your system, close any valves to stop the flow of water so you do not loose too much. Then you will open up the Air Release Valve and release all the pressure in the filter. Pentair usually recommends that you wait at least 30 minutes after this to make sure there is no presure in the tank. Once this is done, you will remove the screws holding the top part of the valve to the bottom, place the screws is a safe place so yo do not lose them - did that once!- and pull the handle portion up, as a single piece.

Place the top part on a flat surface, and remove the Handle Screw (Item #3) while holding down on the top of the valve. This will help keep the spring in the handle from popping up on you! Slowly raise your hand to allow the spring to expand, no parts will go flying this way! (did that one too!) Then just pull out the old Diverter and replace it with the new one. Reassembly is a bit difficult because of that spring, but once the Handle Screw is in place, it is pretty easy. You DO NOT need to lube the gasket/diverter, so you just line up the diverter sections with those in the bottom of the valve and replace the screws. Just in case, the WASTE position is always OVER the Waste Port on the valve.

I require pool pipe work diagram

Check the users manual for these pool filters. They might have the diagram that you are looking for. They contain pretty detailed instructions.

Sand filter putting sand into the pool

With these pool filters, there are several things that you need to check if you have sand returning to the pools. First, check your laterals are not broken or cracked. Even the smalled crack can cause this to happen so really inspect them well. Also, your backwash rate could be too high. Try lowering your backwash flow rate and see if this helps. Make sure that your air strainer is not broken or damaged. Replace if it is.

How do I drain the filtration tank for winter?

There should be a drain at the bottom of your filter. There are really two drains in one ... one part lets the water out the second part (same hole) lets the sand out. Becareful not to remove the sand strainer.

Use a shop vac to blow and/or **** the lines out. Might be wise to lower the water below the suction and discharge lines (bottom drain excluded)

dont forget to pull the two (probably) on your pumps, one in the basket and one in the pump chamber.

alternatively, visit your manufacturer web site for specific instructions.

I dont think you will go too far wrong following my comment but Im not coming to fix any freeze damage :-)

Sand dollar sand filter has great pressure on

Generally, if the filter loses pressure in the filter mode, you have an air leak somewhere. When the filter is low on pressure, check your pump basket area. If there is air in the basket, that is the problem. It could be a bad o-ring under the basket lid, or the air release on the valve, but it will need to be found. Check for drips around the equipment also.

Not sure how long to run pump

First, RECYCLE is a position that allows water to continue to circulate through the system, BYPASSING the filter. If there is a problem with the system, like an air intrusion/leak, by putting the filter in RECYCLE you can determine if the problem is in the filter, or another part, of your system.

As for how long to run the pump, it can be ran 24 hours a day. Normally, the average run time is 8 to 10 hours a day. Most city codes require that pool water is "turned over" one time daily. This means that all of the water in the pool is ran through the filter at least once a day. Usually, 8 to 10 hours will give you that requirement.

Hope this helps!

Sand Dollar Filter

If sand is returning to the pool, the most common cause is the laterals, or the internal pipe is not connected to the valve properly.

If you have laterals with "slots" on one side and solid plastic on the other side, the slots have to be installed so that the slots face downward, toward the bottom of tank. If one, or more, are facing upwards, you are pulling sand right into the pool. If you have the newer laterals, with slots on all four sides, one, or more, may not be tightly in place.

If you have too much sand in the filter, that could cause this issue also. Pentair recommends using the #20 Standard Silica Sand in the filters.

Hope this helps!

Our two-year old filter is not cleaning the water.

There can be a couple of different reasons for this issue to happen. The first thing to know is if you have had an algae issue. If you have had an algae issue, all of the chemicals will not kill the algae inside the filter itself. You will need to comletely empty the filter of sand, wet/dry vac works best, take the internal parts out of the filter and soak them in bleach water, then replace the drain plug and put bleach water in the tank. Scrub the bottom and sides of the tank, a long handled brush works well, and then drain that water out. Rinse out the tank with a hose, reassemble the parts in the tank- MAKE sure that the laterals are in tightly. IF you have laterals with "slots" on one side and solid plastic on the other, the slots MUST GO DOWNWARD, or you will be pouring sand right into the pool.

IF you have not had an algae issue, you may have "packed" sand in the filter. You will need to open the filter up and mix that sand around, being areful not to break a lateral on the bottom.

If there is sand returning to the pool, you may have a broken lateral that needs to be replaced. For an Owner's Manual on the Sand Dollar, use the following link:

Hope this helps!

Want to know how to install a sand dollar filter to the pool

If you have the ABOVE GROUND system, where the filter and pump are right next to each other, you can find a manual at the following link:

http://www.pentairpool.com/pdfs/sand_dollar_sysOM.pdf

The hoses are connected to the ports on the valve. The ports are labelled, but hard to read. The Waste Port is the one under the valve position WASTE and is the easy one to find! The other ports are labelled Return- which is the line going to the pool and Pump- which is the one that comes from the pump into the filter.

If you have an inground pool, with the filter and pump seperate, then the manual for the Sand Dollar is at the following link:

http://www.pentairpool.com/pdfs/SandDollarOM.pdf

Hope this helps you out!

How to replace a Pentair dynamo strainer pot?

I believe the pot is screwed into the pump body/volute. Lift the complete pump enough to turn the entire pot counter clockwise, to unthread it off of the volute.

How to replace a Pentair dynamo strainer pot

I really would need a picture to be more accurate. If you have no way to hold the lid on to get suction, you have to replace the front bowl (pot) as that is where the strainer basket is and how the flow is created. That bowl (pot) unscrews from the front housing. You have to be able to free the suction pipe from the bowl and have enough room to spin the bowl off. You may also have to remove the pressure side pipe if you do not have enough room to turn the bowl (pot) off. If you can not get the bowl off of the front plate, you will have to replace the bowl and front plate all at once.
