Check the grommet that sits on top of tank where lines from go carb. Grommet may be rotten and crack. Try that. Have you ever replace the carb repair kit? The diaphram may be torn, defoam or have holes in them. Carb kit cost arount $10, but don't mess with the welch plug or screen in carb.

what model Echo? If its a new one with the rotating butterfly then the top is set at 5.5 from closed, and the side is 2.5 from closed., if its the older style then the H setting is one and a half from closed and the L is one and three quarters to start.

sounds like a minor adjustment on the high side which is the micture screw to the filter side when it starts to die put the choke on partiallyit should recover breifly which will tell you its a adjustment on the high side

Ensure you have the correct Fuel / Oil mix for your machine first.

Find the choke knob and turn to the closed position.
Find the Primer Bulb and pump it until it is full of fuel, once the bulb is full give it 3 pumps (If the primer bulb is already full of fuel just give it 3 pumps)
Make sure the ignition switch is in the "I" position and not the"O" position.
Pull start! (should take no more than 3-4 pulls before it fires)
Once it fires it may die instantly.... if so cancel the choke and pull start (should fire again on first pull)
If it does not die and it keeps running, cancel the choke while maintaining the engine's rev's.

is it possible you have wound string backwards? this is the usual case for string advancing string .

I know this is a very old post, but figured I'd answer it so any others with this issue can have the fix. With Echo trimmers not revving to speed although they start with no problem, the issue is usually the muffler screen. It becomes plugged with carbon because of improperly mixed 2 stroke fuel. Remove the screen from the muffler and burn off the carbon with a propane torch, or wire brush it off. Once cleaned engine should rev to speed.

Classic sign of coil failure. Run it until it cuts off then test the coil. Most likely 0 resistance, complete open circuit. This is common, coil can't be repaired, only replaced. It is a simple fix, and echo trimmers I believe are worth the cost of coil to repair. Plenty of youtube videos on how to do this repair.

This appears to be a good news problem. There is an easy fix/work around! Consumer reports found the same problem that you have discovered. Holding down the check battery switch allows the unit to operate. Read the link around the sixth paragraph the story is told. Echo Trimmer Can Be Tricky to Start "Our testers discovered the fix by chance. Pressing the check battery button, a last-ditch attempt to get the trimmer working, made all the difference. While this button ordinarily indicates the battery's charge status, in this case it also served to keep the battery from switching into protection mode and cutting off power to the motor.
