Sounds like the kettle isn't getting hot enough. The thermostat is usually at fault in this situation which can be determined by checking the amp draw on the kettle. the common complaint is the kette is too hot and burning but what really is going on is it's not hot enough so the seed won't pop. Because of the heat that is there it will loose it's moisture, dry out and burn instead. You will end up with lots of old maids . Really stale corn seed will act the same way because all the moisture in it is gone and thats what is needed to pop it.

This is a really old question, but.Check to verify that the needle bearing is not missing. I is a small round part above the gear on the agitator shaft. Also see how worn the crossbar bushing is. There should only be a minimum of loose play in the shaft moving it side to side.Make sure the lid assembly is not installed backwards on the kettle casting. The lip part of the kettle is the front or left side, and the cord should come out of the bottom towards the doors/operator side.

Unlikely to be the plug adapter. That would just trip the breaker. Your issue is likely to be leaking voltage from the motor windings. I had this with a 1950s desk fan.

It all depends on the conditions of its storage and the climate where you are baking. As long as it still rises, it's good to go. The dates tend to be very conservative.

I don't have one. If I did I would look for a tag that had a serial number, and then contact the manufacturer and ask them.
