STEP ONE:

NOTE: You may not need to enable the built-in Administrator account. If this was the only normal administrator account you had, then Safe Mode should automatically boot into the built-in Administrator account. See: How to Start Vista in Safe Mode

A) If Safe Mode did not boot into the built-in Administrator account, then enable the Built-in Administrator account. If it did , then go to step 2C.
NOTE: See: How to Enable or Disable the Real Built-in Administrator Account in Vista

B) You may have another S-1-5..... folder (SID key) above it with the exact same number without the .bak at the end of it.

6. For Two S-1-5..... folders (SID key) with the same Number -
NOTE: This is if you have two S-1-5..... folders (SID key) with the exact same numbers, but the second (below) one has the .bak at the end of the numbers.
A) In the left pane, right click on the first (top) S-1-5..... folder (SID key) that does not have .bak at the end of the numbers and click Rename. (See screenshot below)

OPTION TWO:

Delete the User Account Profle

B) Repeat step 6 until you find the one that you deleted in step 1 above.
NOTE: If the user account is not here, then it has already been removed when deleted in step 1. Go to step 9.
7. To Backup the Registry SID Key -
WARNING: You should backup this SID key to be safe in case you delete the wrong one in step 8 below.
A) Right click on the SID key, and click Export.
B) Type in a name and save the REG file to a safe location.
NOTE: This is your backup. To Restore the Backup, right click on the REG backup file and click Merge.

1. sound driver 2. microphone settings in volume control applet 3. tap test (tap the area around the microphone and see if eg Sound Recorder picks it up) 4. external microphone
If you get to step 4 before you get anything then your problem is one of missing or damaged microphone.

I had thesame problem on a brand-new Dell laptop. The solution is to intall IDT STAC9228 Audio Driver (file R204473.exe), which can be downloaded from Dell web site (http://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R204473.EXE). This solved my problem with not having mic when using Skype.

Try this: remove the battery and unplug the power, hold down the power button for 10 seconds, then plug the power back in, and try turn it on again. If this doesn't work, check the power plugin port, if anything in there is moving around, it might be broken and need to be repaired. Check for a local electronics or computer store for that. The only other problem I can think of is that the motherboard died, probably from over-heating. This usually requires a new laptop, or an equivalent price for a new motherboard. Good luck, I truly hope the first one works.

Internal mic won't work on dell 1521

I reinstalled Vista a few months ago and my internal mic has not worked since. Here's how I've troubleshooted so far:
Went to: Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Manage Audio Devices > Recording > [Selected default= Microphone Array, SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC Working].
I made sure that the volume is on, updated the driver, and made sure it is enabled. I've been testing the recording using Sound Recorder. I used the Drivers and Utilities CD to look for additional drivers under sound and couldn't find any.
Are there other steps I could take?

Bootable decices?

When I try to get on my laptop, it says there are no bootable devices and to try to reset thecomptuer. How do I do that?

Friend if it says no bootable devices it means that it cannot detect the hard disk or optical disk such as dvd/cd rom. The problem is the connection. check the IDE/SATA cable from hard disk or optical disk to the mainboard.I'm sure that is only the problem unless the mention disks are present in the unit. Just mount properly the connections

Windows Failed to load because Kernel file is missing, or corrupt

Recently, my hard drive wouldn't load because a system32 file was missing so I tried reinstalling my windows vista OS onto the hard drive. When the installation process gets to the part where the computer restarts and windows has to load for the first time it says that "Windows Failed to load because Kernel file is missing, or corrupt" any ideas on what I should do?

Also, another problem is I just bought a new Seagate 320GB hard drive and it was working great for a week then I turned on my computer with that hard drive in and it says that no internal HDD can be found. I reseated it and everything. Even tried putting it in a freezer for a while to get the disk running and everything. Please help!

Are you talking about two problems on one computer? If so, the first problem doesn't matter until the second one is fixed. If you are talking about two different computers, then the problems can be each addressed.

For the hard drive that is not recognized, where did it come from? If you purchased it used, you may be out of luck. It sounds like you have a pretty good idea how computers work, and it also sounds like this hard drive does not work at all.

If these are both the same computer, then replacing the hard drive with a known working hard drive will most likely provide you with a solution.

I wish I had better news for you.

My computer turns on but does not go past the booting page. I ran a diagnostic test and got the error code: 2000-0146. What does this mean?

It means "DST Log contains previous error(s)."
Dell Support says “If the diagnostic test reports one of the above errors, refer to Dell Troubleshooting Wizard: "Hard Drive Fails the Diagnostics" Wizard ID: 324398”
