The drum is a metal drum that takes an electrostatic charge to attract the toner particles. Sometimes the drum can be cleaned. Taking it apart isn't easy. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you.

Verticle lines appear on document when scanning
There is a thin strip of glass next to the main platen glass, where documents fed through the feeder are scanned. You most likely have Wite-Out or some sort of debris stuck to the glass. You can probably wipe this residue off, but if you need to clean that strip of glass, use alcohol and a lint-free rag.
How conect the brother to my loptop dell
The printer has a USB port. Download and install the software from the Brother site if needed:
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/us/en/dlf/download_top.html?reg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=mfc7420_all. Select your OS. Get a USB cable with male A and male B ends, less than 6' long is recommended; the square end connects to the printer and the rectangular end goes to the computer. Connect this when the installation prompts you to do so or after rebooting the computer after the software installation. The USB port is on the side of the printer near where the handset cord connects to the unit.
I hope this helps.

(USB hubs and print servers are not recommended for use with all-in-ones. The scanner functions may not work if you have a bad cable and will not work with most print servers.)
Drum maintenance
i;m not sure what your question is, but if your getting a drum error, it could be one of 2 things.
1. you need to clean the wires on the drum, there is a purple tab that slides back and forth that cleans wires.
2. you need to replace the drum. take the toner cartridge out of the unit, separate it from the drum, replace the drum, re-attach toner cartridge to the drum, and re-insert the toner back into the printer.
thanks

Try this. We are Brother authorized.
I need to delete the name that goes out on the top
From your computer....Open your CONTROL CENTER for your particular machine. In that menu, on the bottom left there is a REMOTE SETUP link. If you're wired directly to your computer you'll need to access the INITIAL SETUP icon. In that window you will be able to change NAME & PHONE # (don't forget to put the area code).
Hope this info was helpful to you. Good Luck!

ok, both of those solutions are totally bogus....first, the quality issue...i build about 25 of these cartridges a week, and it sounds like you should check the life of the drum unit, if you haven't cleaned the corona wire already. ( refer to the printer documentation) Brother uses a seperate drum unit that will wear out after 12,000 pages, not the pickup roller. So if you have replaced more than 4 toner carts, it is likely, depending on your usage, that the drum unit is worn. Take out the whole toner/drum unit, remove the toner cart by pressing on the lever on the left front of the assembly and pull up and out. Now you should have two pieces. Look into the larger piece, and if you see excessive wear on the drum, it needs to be replaced. The jamming is a different issue, though....let me know if you need more info....don't buy a new printer yet!!!
