I think you have successfully troubleshot this issue.
The fact that there was a disconnected monitor cable inside of the laptop tells me that someone was inside the laptop before you and they weren't very careful.
The one last ditch effort I would take is to download the latest firmware for this laptop and install that to see whether or not the firmware had become corrupted.
You've done a very good job trouble-shooting this issue.

If you were to log on to the manufacturer's web site, I think you will be pleasantly surprised as usually one is able to download, by model number, Customer Instruction Manuals, list of Dealers, for spare parts and service, Driver downloads and Installation Instructions as required.

Just Google the manufacturer's name and follow the links. Make certain you are directed to the manufacturer's web site as some search engines direct you to other sites and they charge for the information that is normally free of charge.

I am afraid you will not be able to solve it with out a CD. I suugest you to borrow it from some one atleast,

1.Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD drive, and then restart the computer.
2.Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD drive if you are prompted.
3.When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
4.Press 1 (One) to select windows XP and then hit enter.
5.When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
6.At the command prompt, Type Bootrec /RebuildBcd and then press ENTER.
7.If the Bootrec.exe tool runs successfully, it presents you with an installation path of a Windows directory. To add the entry to the BCD store, type yes. A confirmation message appears that indicates the entry was added successfully. 8.If the Bootrec.exe tool cannot locate any missing Windows installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order in which they are presented. Press ENTER after each command.
Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

Bootrec /rebuildbcd

1.Restart the computer

Click on your control panel, go into add or remove, scroll down until you see symantec anti virus, click on remove or un-install depending on your operational system, this should successfully remove it.

This problem could be be the backlight failing or the screen inverter needs to be resoldered.

Either way i wouldn't recommend repairing it yourself unless you are confident with a soldering iron or with replacing the laptop screen itself.

You could try to start in safe mode if you can then do a restore back to when it was ok
then make sure that you have all the windows updates that is available because it could be a driver issue

most likely, your system is experiencing some thermal or heat issues. try to clean the fan and make sure your computer is placed on a well ventilated area. updating the BIOS may also help since there are BIOS updates that includes improvement on fan or thermal management. if that does not help, you may apply thermal paste to the proc, or you may have to get a fan/heatsink and even motherboard replacement

Yups its looking like a virus or registry error so make ur registry error fix using reginout regcleaner

If the laptop shuts down and won't boot up until it has cooled down, then the CPU is overheating and goes into thermal shutdown. This is caused by either a faulty fan or the fan and heatsink assembly is clogged with dust.
If this is not fixed then eventually the CPU will fail completely.
Check the fan to see if it spins freely if not then replace the fan.
If the fan and heatsink is clogged with dust then remove the dust from the fan and heatsink fins.
