You may need to go into BIOS and set the SATA HD advanced properties to use legacy OS (XP is considered legacy by many SATA drivers (in BIOS). The XP CD will tell you there is no HD installed.

I was working in a computer with the same problem, when you remove the keyboard and the keyboard cover at the right side of the power button you can see an small plastic cap with two wires, is the num lock led, when the wires are under the top cover and the screws of the keyboard or the cover are too tight the wire is damage and make contac with the earth shuting down the power supply, check the wires, repair if broken and take care that its not under the top cover when you assembly.

Since you did not give the specification of your laptop, I assume it came in with built-in webcam. First go to start and browse through All Programs for YouCam. If it is there, launch the program. If you do not have it on your program list, go to

and download either the trial or the full version of the webcam software YouCam and install on your laptop. This should be able to activate your webcam.

this is probably a driver issue if you are lucky other wise the touch pad must have become faulty

install them and check if the touch pad starts working

if not then its probably a physical fault and needs replacing

If you have an old style mouse it might need cleaning. Turn it over and see if the case will slide off. There is a ball inside the case. You need to clean out the dust - you can use some canned air to get the dust out.

Try taking the battery out and starting it without the battery. If this doesn't work, contact Compaq (HP) immediately and take advantage of your warranty.

Replace the inverter, the screen, or the power line to the screen within the laptop has come loose or is frayed.  Can't tell until you crack this nut open.

Sounds like the tech is right, a dead motherboard would have those symptoms. They're worth around $600-700 on the open market.

The audio driver may not be installed or needs to be re-installed.

You may have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashes on and off or displays reddish pink hue. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickers on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replace the CCFL lamp.
To determine if the video card or the LCD is faulty, connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight. It could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out, this is the most likely case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

on a side note, It has been my experiance that the power jacks are soldered on the mainboard and then thinly coated with glue so they hold position, keep that in mind because with yours being loose the odds are that the glue around your power jack is broken, so when you pull the jack out from the plastic case be careful not to break the solder connection on the mainboard

Hmm i'm having a similar problem with my sony vaio.
There is several things that could be the cause. Is the laptop getting very warm? are the fans spinning?
I would try a bit of compressed air in the air vents to see if that improves anything. Also if you have 2 ram sticks, try using just one, and try both ports. some times the connections are a little funny. Other than that I would take it all apart add one compoent at a time, its possible that something has failed

It will restore everything back to factory settings like it just came out of the box. Try the F11 like i suggested.

If that would be the case, your laptop's motherboard is faulty. It needs to be replace.

Try restoring the system to the last best configuration by going to Accessories on your Start Menu and clicking on System Tools>System Restore and find a day on the calendar and click on it to restore back to that date.
