My Acer Aspire M5100 get power but will not turn on

Does the CPU fan come on ? Does the power lead that plugs into the cpu fan on the motherboard supply the required voltage ? This one is a bit harder and once you check it you most likely need to apply thermal paste - but is there sufficient thermal paste between the CPU and the heat sink on the CPU ? Does the power supply box in the tower case have its fan spinning when power on ? Is the motherboard bent ? I have seen this one - poor installation with different sized mounting screws. When motherboard gets hot the motherboard went faulty. Some motherboards need a rubber insulator under the screw maybe there is a short under one of the mounting screws !

Check hard drive cables. Check fan cables. Check the power button and wires. Check RAM cards to make sure they are seated properly. Is there anything special about the power supply?

The leads from your MOTHERBOARD TO YOUR HARD DRIVE make sure they have secure dust free connections and are not faulty.

Any bad or faulty power or data lead or connection can cause a computer not boot up.

Motherboard and a Hard Drive any leads between them will fail before your motherboard or your hard drive if its a flat ribbon 40 pin type IDE replace it this will be the first to fail.

Make sure your graphics card is securely seated with no dust built up or in the socket

if you remove your graphics check the socket to make sure its dust free

restart your computer then reinstall it this should activate found new hardware wizard

Make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd floppy have secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs

Power and Data to travel through every working device and to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

even something as small as a faulty power lead or fan lead can cause you problems

computers need all of the data and electrical current to travel through every working device and to have an end to be able work properly

Make sure ram modules and cmos batteries have dust free secure seatings and cmos battery has charge some motherboards cmos batteries are soldered in

Check you CPU make sure its securely seated and has thermal grease

Lights come on. Fans turn. No video.

Try an external monitor. If that works, reseat the video cable at the motherboard and at the LCD. Otherwise, the LCD is probably dead.

Adding 2 gb memory in a m5100

You can as long s you have room on the motherboard, its the correct type. Memory can be tricky to get it to be recognized and have the system ecognize it. Most issues are with the OS, especially any Windows based system, thanks to Microsoft's usual nonsense.

Is a 500w power supply to much for my pc?

wattage is a measurement of power output. however wattage is not nececassrily a measure of continuous power output. wattage is a measurement of potential power output. this means on one hand if a pc is only idling the wattage of the power supply unit (psu) required to run the components might be very low. on the other hand if you have several power intensive applications running simultaneously with several different web browsers open featuring several active tabs open in each browser and you are also streaming video on the internet on one browser and downloading files while watching a movie all at the same time then the pc would probably be working near its maximum and would require near the maximum amount of available wattage from the psu. a certain amount of the psu's wattage is needed to power each of the key power consuming internal components - the cpu, the memory, the motherboard chipset and other motherboard devices, any expansion cards installed on the motherboard as well as the spinning of the hard drive, optical drive and cooling fans. the total wattage required to power all these and other internal components is an indications of the very bare total minimum power capacity that a pc will require. this means that generally the higher the wattage of the psu the more stable the overall performance of the computer islikely to be. the psu also consumes as well as delivers power due to the in-built cooling fans required to cool it by venting hot air from the back of the pc during operation. therefore as a general rule the higher the wattage of the psu, the greater the capacity of the psu to take the powering of all the internal components of the pc that require power (including the psu's own cooling fans) well within its stride.so your friend was correct to draw your attention to the important issue of the optimisation of power consumption in a pc and ensuring that you have the correct wattage of psu to adequately and safely power the internal components of the pc. however your friend has slightly misunderstood how the psu works. perhaps you could explain to this friend that a pc with an underpowered psu is far more likely to damage a pc's internal components than a pc with a psu of excessive wattage. In this way, both of you will have helped to enhance each other's knowledge and awareness of an important issue in the maintenance of a pc.

The lead from the pc to the screen is brocken so

If the screen connected to this computer has a detachable video cable (as almost all modern monitors do) then detach the video cable at both ends throw it away and replace it with a new one. Video cables are not expensive. If yours is an old monitor with a permanently attached cable then this might be the perfect opportunity to upgrade to a new modern monitor which will come with a new cable enclosed. The latest flat screen PC monitors are relatively inexpensive.

My acer laptop wont start

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you have a system registry corruption. If you can boot into safe mode, by presssing F8(though on some computers it is F10 or F12), then perform a system restore to the last known good configuration.
If that does not work, boot your laptop to your OS disk, choosing to repair the installation.
Finally if that does not work, you will have to format your hard drive and reinstall your OS.
