I HAVE A PANASONIC DMR

The 'No Read' error is a classic case of a failed laser (and/or DVD drive). In many Panasonic DVD devices (recorders, players and some Blu-Ray models) the laser is part of a traverse unit or 'assembly' (a block with laser and spindle motor in one). With this unit, unless you are tech. savvy and are aware of the likely cost(s) of replacement part(s) for this type of product, you can go ahead and order from Panasonic directly - subject to shipping and tax (assuming the part is available) - this could be expensive, and you would also need the right equipment/tools and experience to do this (it is much easier to simply replace the whole DVD drive itself in the unit - just note the original drive number and connection type before seeking a new one, after that - should be a straightforward fit, save on labour costs...) - these drives are not exactly easy to repair at individual component level; hence why in most cases the whole drive is replaced when part of it fails (not impossible to replace either!).

If you aren't familiar with this sort of thing, your next best bet is to submit the recorder to an authorised Panasonic service centre, obtain a (reasonable) quote on likely repair/part(s) cost(s), along with a second opinion, then you can make a firm decision on that basis. Up to you whether you pursue it further or not. The DMR-EZ28 is not as old as the DMR-ES15 and is more reliable in general. Assuming this can be repaired, it could be very expensive, so keep that in mind, but you won't know for sure unless you get a quote from a workshop. It may also take several weeks before repair (if possible) is completed.

If all else fails, or it is probably going to be too expensive/uneconomical to fix, or you cannot get a replacement DVD drive anywhere for this model, then consider a new one - but ONLY as a last resort. The cost of replacing a disc drive in your existing unit vs. the cost of a brand new machine could be significant.

Not the best news, but certainly worth investigating - if you want to do so.

Panasonic DMR-EZ28 and DMR EZ27 both freeze up every other day.

I have the panasonic DMR EZ 28 for 4 months. I have beendownloading home videos from my camcorder through the IN 2 port without difficulty until yesterday; Now, when I attach my camcorder through the IN 2 port, I can hear the video, BUT not see by video on the TV monitor; I reconnected the camcorder through the IN 1 port in the back of the DMR and it works, but it's a pain to be working in the back of the machine. Why aren't I seeing the video (but hearing it) when connecting to the IN2. Faulty connection??? Did I program something wrong???

Dmr-ez28 reads u99 will do

Hi,

Initially, error code "U99" indicates that the main microprocessor could not talk with one of its subordinate processor; specifically, the timer microprocessor.
taran_2005_55.jpg

Offhand, this is a hardware fault indicating that controller processor could not initialize its slave timer processor. Often, this could not be addressed by a setting, nor a configuration nor a reset. Almost always, the 475 has to be opened up to effect repairs.

Options then are:
  • consider a DIY (do-it-yourself) repair if and only if comfortable working with electronic components & circuitry, use of a DVM/VOM, a soldering iron/station and safe practices with electrically powered devices. Access to a Service Manual or at the very least, a schematic diagram would be a necessity;
  • should you be uncomfortable with a DIY, perhaps your best bet would then be to consult with and/or seek the services of an authorized Service Center (specially if still under some form of extended warranty) or a qualified professional.

If a DIY is being considered, a couple of tries:
  • power OFF the 475;
  • press VHS to DVD COPYING, REC and OPEN/CLOSE for 5 seconds;
  • display should show "TM L1".
The above is a TEST mode and would re-initialize the main unit's parameters.

and/or
  • power ON;
  • press CH UP and CH down simultaneously for 5 seconds;
  • the unit should turn OFF automatically.
The ATP setting and all parameters (including clock) are initialized.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

I have the Panasonic DMR EZ28K and while in stand

You can probably fix this issue by updating the firmware and doing a system reset. First, download the latest firmware and burn it to a CD. You can download it from here: http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/support/Video/DVD-Recorders-Players/DVD-Recorders/Drivers-Downloads/model.DMR-EZ28K.D#ts

Now, power the unit down, press Skip/Rev + Time Slip + Open/Close for 5 seconds. The CDR should be in the disc drive as you do this. This will install the new firmware and re-initialize the system settings.

The complete manual is here: http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/DMREZ28-MUL.pdf

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa! We would sure appreciate a 4 "thumbs-up" rating for this answer. Happy holidays!
