Garmin nuvi 255W GPS Receiver - Page 2 Questions & Answers
Lost all my maps?
Do a hard reset on the device. Download Garmin Express and install it to your PC. Connect your device to your PC. Garmin Express will identify it and allow you to install all the maps and software that the device has a subscription to. You either have a corrupt file or a space issue. If it is a space issue, insert an SD card 8gb or less and have Garmin Express install the maps and updates to it.
GPS will not come on
I have the same model. When I had a problem I called customer service. They linked w/ my computer (nuvi was plugged into it) and fixed the problem! Give it a try. They are very nice.

Nuvi 255W, can I disassemble and remove the battery and operate without it?
If it won't start up off the cigarette lighter cord, removing the battery will not solve anything. Replacement batteries are available, even the solder in styles. Just do a google search for garmin batteries
Try charging it with a 110 volt charger to see if it will come on. If not, there's something else wrong inside.
I have never used the free updated map . Can I
The only time garmin give free map updates is if a new map becomes available within 60 days of your satnav first accessing satellites. Details of how to update your maps are at
http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_mapsThe only difference in getting them free or paying for them is that if you're entitled to a free update when you click on the GET UPDATE link you'll either be directed to the payments page if it's not free or to the download page if it is. The cost of a map update is approx 50 euros for a one off update or you can get a lifetime update for around 130 euros. The lifetime update is for the life of your satnav not for your own lifetime.
It's a good idea to back up your favourites before updating just in case anything goes wrong. You can get details of how to do this at

Maps for most GPS devices are updated several times a year. Your map is from 2010 and should be updated. You can go to the garmin site and pay to download and install upgraded maps or do a google search for map upgrades and you'll find some services offering lifetime upgrades for a few dollars more than the Garmin one time upgrade. I did this and have had no problems updating the maps on my Garmin Nuvi 250.
I was just given the Garmin 255W as a Christmas
There are no lifetime maps for your Garmin nuvi. Garmin updates their maps over time, so there are no lifetime maps available for the device. There are free maps and you can buy maps from Garmins website.

When I turn on the
Hello,
the
problem is actually a software issue and since resetting does not solve
the problem,I think updating the deice should solve the problem. Update
is just like reinstall the system software of the unit and it might get
things fixed.
To perform update, follow the below procedures;
1.
Plug one end of the USB cable into your GPS and the other end into your
desktop or laptop computer. The GPS device will load the appropriate
driver automatically, and a message on your GPS tells you that it is
connected to your computer via USB.
2. Open your Internet browser of choice and type in the following web address: http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27
3. Download the appropriate version of the software for your computer
(Windows or Apple) and Install the WebUpdater by following the wizard
(accept defaults).
4. Click "Start," "Programs," "Garmin" and "
WebUpdater" to update your firmware and your maps. Periodically check
and make sure your software is current.
If the computer does not recognize the Gps, you can try the below procedure;
With the unit OFF, hold your right thumb on the Upper, Left part of the
screen and plug the USB plug from your computer into the back of your
GPS. The unit should boot up and stop at the screen where it shows a
little computer, wire, and little GPS. Your computer should now show the
GPS as connected. Only now you can pull your thumb from the screen.
Then use Webupdater to upload 4.40 to your GPS.
Hopefully, the above should be helpful
Good luck.

Need updates but have no cord to fit it
Not familiar with the 255W but I am sure it will have either a standard USB mini or micro socket. Take it with you to a computer/electronics store. Any good quality mini or micro USB cable that is readily available should provide the connection for you.
Can I update the map.
Garmin's policy for most of its nuvi GPS units is to allow you one free map upgrade. For example, I bought a Nuvi 755T in December and their policy said:
The n?Maps Guarantee entitles you to 1 or more free map updates within 60 days of Dec 06, 2010.
Some Nuvi models come with lifetime free map upgrades, these models have "LM" or "LMT" at the end of their model number.
How do I convert my sat nav from europe to usa
Some Sat Navs can't convert, If it's bought & set to UK & Ireland maps, then you are stuck. 2nd thing , even if you can use Europe Maps on your Sat Nav, you still will be unable, to load USA maps.
Sat Nav not compatable, You will have to buy a NEW ONE.
There is a black disc but I do not see any
my Magellen came with a black disk with adhesive on 1 side. Intended to be adhered to any smooth surface (e.g., windshield). The mount for my unit includes a suction cup. So, mount black disk to windshield and attach suction cup to smooth side of black disk. Be sure disk is positioned where suction cup and bracket and GPS will have sufficient room to mount everything.
