Westell 6100, to smart for job!

you have to activate DHCP in order to make the westell a modem "dummy" (it will just act as a bridge to the internet from your Linksys.
on the modem, go to a setting that is similar to "Public Routed Subinterface". dont choose anything that says "proxy" or "NAT".

find out the Linksys's IP adress by looking at the devices or computers list on the Modem's home page.

Now, put that IP adress on the setting "Public Routed Subinterface" (or similar). If it has a "Subnet Mask" option, type in "255.255.255.0". Also, If it has a "open firewall" or "bypass firewall" option, enable it.
If it does not have a firewall option, disable the firewall on the MODEM, not the linksys. This is also called DMZPlus mode.

If the above does not work, go here on the entire instrucitons for setting up the linksys with your modem.

Westell 6100 problems

we had the same issue. Here is how we fixed it. I had the xbox 360 plugged directly into the westell 6100 modem via ethernet cable. the mtu test failed everytime. I was extremely frustrated and called microsoft and verizon (dsl) about 10 times each and they kept giving me the wrong solution. (get a new modem, get a new server, pay us money and we'll figure it out etc...) Here is what a man at microsoft told me to do and finally it worked. Power cycle your equipment (unplug modem and xbox 360 for 30 sec.) then, plug in modem first and wait until all lights are back on. Then plug in xbox and run test. In my case mtu failed again. I was then instructed to go to my dashboard and restore xbox to factory default which I did and rerun the test. This time everything FINALLY passed. We were in business. I then decided to try connecting through my airport extreme router. I power cycled again starting with the airport then the modem then the xbox and ran the test and unbelievable as it sounds it all passed and my son is now sitting happily on the couch playing a game online with his xbox 360. This took away days of my life to get this simple thing done. I was given codes to change and change back on the computer, phone calls to everyone and the solution was so simple when you finally reach a knowledgeable person. Hope this will help save someone else the time I spent!

RE: router problem

You're welcome. anything to help out.

I'm sure you still have the phone filters installed.
So,
Run a speed test from here.
Then, compare it to the speed that you're paying for. For ex., you might be paying for a 1500 Kbps download and 256 Kbps upload.

If any speed (upload or download) is lower than 50 Kbps, call your service provider and tell them that you are not receiving the reasonable speed you paid for and that you have already cleaned your "cache" (they will suggest that you clean several files from your computer but that does not affect your speed).

Thank you for responding. Its rare for people to respond to helpers.

Port forwording

ok port forward if any has router this is easy ill get too others in momment

routers port forwarding features type in ip address in internet explorer search bar at top
router ip's start like this 192. type the whole ip in
this will ask you for password and that usually is the word "password" or "admin" threw that you can set the router port forward by going down the list

now for comps with out routers
goto control panel
then network connections
right click on your connection
goto properties
goto advanced
goto settings
you will be directed to windows fire wall
goto exceptions add program or port you want to forward

basically port forwarding is a program that keeps 2 comps from having conflict with each other running the same program and helps in monitoring ports for intrussions

USB Connection

Hi floinmist .

Westell 6100 modem by default can only be used for 1 PC . It cannot orit is not enabled to use for 2or morer computers as it creates a conflict within. Ethernet connection is the BEST connection for you to use.> your USB is sent to you by you provider { ISP} or by westell packages. Its is only a spare cable just in case your PC doesnt support ethernet connection ,  nothing else.

To resolve this issue you might want to upgrade your modem to a router w/c is westell versalink . You can connect 2 or more computers  { wired or wireless connection } and is more stable compared to your westell 6100.

Connecting 2 computers could cause slow, intermittent and NO connections at all problems.

IF you have other questions pls feel free to ask and let me know if theres anything ii can assist you with .

Best wishes.

Get no connection useing 6100 modem connected to wireless B router

Hi starman re westell 6100.

Hi i hope you have find solution with your issue ifnot let me walk you through on how to get it up and working.

First , you need to connect your modem directly to your computer. We need to access its Graphic Unit Interface by opening your browser and type onyour address bar its default gateway.

The def. gateway can be 192.168.1.1 or depending what ISP youre connected to . For ATT broadband its 192.168.1.254 / verizon broadband is 192.168.1.1..  { onyour address bar : type in 192.168.1.1 and hit Enter.

to check def gateway : you can go to start > run > cmd then enter > on DOS command type in ipconfig /all  then HIT enter > itl provide you your network list > your default gateway is your westell modem or if your linksys is connected than it should be you linksys.

Itl route you to your westell page. Try to go to  Broadband and choose connection or configure connection.button. Look for configure and by default you will see its in PPPoE> change it to bridged ethernet and save.

By enabling bridge to your modem w/c is westell youl have a chance to configure you linksys to PPPoE.

Connect you westell to your linksys and on your computer try to check your default gateway as seen above. By default linksys can be access by typing in 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.1. Itl prompt you for UN and PW: by default your Username is : Blank and Password should be admin. { blank = dont type anything}

On your linksys SETUP page > by default it is set to DHCP or obtain IP address automatically. Pls change it to PPPoE and type in your UN and PW : username@isp { your ISP name}. and hit save settings or save.

Restart your linksys and try to browse to check fore connection.

========================
For all types of modem such as westell : you need to set it to bridge mode first foryou wireless router to work ie linksys. Set linksys to PPPoE .. that should work .

For more detailed steps or questions re: this issue pls dont hestiate contact me. Best wishes.

Pls enable you Wireless Encryption for your home network security.

Ciao .

DSL Modem

That means that the phone is interfeering with the broadband. Often you fix this kind of problems by replacing the broadband filter. If it does not work after replacement it means there is a problem either with phone line or with broaband provider.
In this case contact first ISP (broaband provider), then your phone company to locate the problem.
Most likely it is the filter.

Westell 6100 modem stops downloading

I've noticed that when I've got all 4 of my computers and server plugged in through a switch, the router will fail when I am torrenting. Unfortunately, this only happens when the traffic is too intense, thereby trying to rout back to the phone line. Try picking up the phone and calling someone next time it
fails, that usually fixes the problem.
This sounds very Hocus Pocus, and it might be due to poor wiring or something, but give it a shot!
