Welcome to Fixya. Can you please check if the the light will lit up when you charge the device. If the Archos 705 wont turn on you can try to follow the steps below to reset the device.
There are two levels of resetting that you can use to bring it back to life.
The more gentle reset is to hold down the power button for 15 seconds.
If the gentle reset doesn't work, it's time for the hard reset. The hard reset will result in losing any preferences that have been set. But if your Archos 705 is wedged, it'll bring it back to life. To perform this reset on your Archos 705 you need to remove the battery. Behind where the battery sits is a little hole. Press the end of a paper clip or a needle into the hole to hit the hard reset button that sits in there.

I think for this one, you can reload the firmware. Ihave had to remove the battery and reset. So if you do that, moe your files to another drive if possible as you woudl have to restore them after a reset. Try firm ware first.

the archos 101 runs android which supports drag and drop. So you should be able to find your device from my computer and drag and drop whatever files you want.
Most music files should play natively from the android music player.
Video files can be a bit trickier. You have to make sure that you have it at a lower resolution so the cpu can handle it.You can use winff http://winff.org/html_new/downloads.html to convert it to a compatible format.
You will have to change the resolution if its too high, but there are various android apps like Rockplayer http://rockplayer.freecoder.org/index_en.html arcmedia, Vital Player, IM Player, and vidtrim which are media players which are compatible with a multitude of codecs, containers, and formats. I am not sure if all these players are available on the archos market, but you can download there .apk (the rockplayer website has their .apk on their website and check settings > applications > unknowned sources and install them from outside of the app market as well.
PDF's will need a pdf reader, There should be an app on the archos market for that.
If you just want to see the file itself from the device. You will need a file manager like i/o manager r Astro. Again, I'm not sure what apps the archos market has, but you can always find the .apk's online.

I had the same problem. I tried everything I could think of but this is what eventually fixed my problem.

UNPLUG POWER AND PULL OFF THE BATTERY. IT SHOULD HELP. IF NOT, TRY AGAIN COUPLE OF TIMES. IF STILL IT DOESN'T COME BACK, UNDER THE BATTERY YOU HAVE A 'RESET' BUTTON, BUT AFTER IT COMES BACK IT MIGHT ASK YOU TO RE-CALIBRATE THE SCREEN. GOOD LUCK!

There is a known issue with archos players since Gen 04 that causes them to discharge more quickly if left in their charging stations (DVR dock) after the full charge light begins to flash. If you charge the unit this way, your battery is probably toasted. Good news is that the 705 battery is user replaceable. Bad news is its over 40 bucks. Try newmp3technology.com or ebay for a good price on a new battery.

I know what you are hearing is a software issue, when you registered the product you should be able to go back and get the latest software.

did u turn it on before drying it out if yes it is beyond basic repair 'coz u just shorted the boards out

This means that WIndows or whatever OS you have does not know what mother prog to use to run this file. If you know what prog is used to run that file, then right click on the file name and select Open With. You get a dialogue box giving a number of progs that may be used to open that file. If you do not find the prog name in the list then go to browse and locate that prog and select and also mark the box to indicate that in future also you want this prog to open that and similar files.
